Sarsfeilds take big stride towards league title

Kevin McKernan fires in Sarsfields opening goal

Sarsfields   2–13      Con Magees Glenravel  1–09

The top two teams in Division 3 clashed at the ‘Bear Pit’ on Sunday and after a tough game victory went to the Paddies who strengthened their position at the top of the league table.

The visitors Glenravel got off to a good start and points from Josh McKeown, Eamon Fyfe and David Higgins had them two in front, but Sarsfields hit back with two points to square things by the end of the opening quarter.

Glenravel went back in front when Josh McKeown pointed and things looked good for the Con Magees when Declan Trainor finished to the Sarsfields net after a flowing move.  Josh McKeown added a point from a seemingly impossible angle but just before the break Sarsfields upped the pace and a Kevin McKernan goal saw the trail by just two at the break 1-7 to 1-5.

Whatever was said in the home changing room at half time had the desired effect as Sarsfields hit the ground running in the second half as they rattled over four unanswered points to lead by two.

The league leaders were now on top and opened the gap to four before Glenravel replied with points from David Higgins and Josh McKeown. The game was still in the balance though Sarsfields had the upper hand and they sealed the win in the final minute with a Jim McMenamin goal.
