Shamrocks beat Saints in top of the table clash

Loughgiel Shamrocks travelled to the Shaws Rd to play fellow top of the table rivals St. Pauls on Tuesday evening and came away winners by 1-14 to 2-2 a result that moves them to the top of the table. In the corresponding home fixture at Fr Healy Park Loughgiel, the home club scored late on to secure a draw and stay unbeaten in Division 3  and with both having remained unbeaten since this eagerly awaited fixture was going to go a long way to who would claim the league honours.

The early exchanges were a nervous affair before Tres McKinley finally opened the scoring for the visiting side. Further points from Sarah McCloskey and Louise McKillop put Loughgiel on a firm footing. However St.Pauls were soon to level the game when they scored a goal from a ball over the top of the defenders. Loughgiel would again score the next three points, 2 from the excellent McKinley and a free from Meadhbh McCormick. St.Pauls replied with a point of their own before the move of the game involving Cara McIntyre and Tres McMullan resulted in the latter hitting the net. Again St.Pauls showed their character to score a goal of their own before McKinley and Louise McKillop replied with further points. St.Pauls finished the scoring with a kicked point to leave the half time score of St.Pauls 2.02 Loughgiel 1.08.

The second half was a quieter affair with St.Pauls being penned into their own half, with the Loughgiel midfield and half backs dominant. Room was at a premium and it took some excellent long range points to break down the home defence. Firstly Sinead McAleese, Tres McKinley, Clare McKillop, cousin Katie McKillop, McKinley once again and finally Meadhbh McCormick scoring points to finish the scoring with the visiting side winning by 1.14 to 2.02.

Overall a very physical game played in good spirit, with the stickwork of the visiting side being the main difference and having seven different scorers. Special mention to Tres McKinley who scored 1.06 from open play but on the whole a good team performance from all involved.
