Aldergrove 1-7 Casements 0-7
In their last league game before the cut-off Casements crashed to their third league defeat in a row, with Aldergrove seizing the lead with eight minutes remaining, to win by a point, 1-7 to 0-9. The first half belonged to Casements who led by 0-5 to 0-2 at half time and looked to be on their way to a much needed victory. The Portglenone men were in control throughout the half but will regret many missed chances which would have sealed the matter. St. James’ were a much improved team in the second half, the crucial score being a twenty second minute Chris O’Kane goal which fired Aldergrove into life.
Aldergrove were first to score with a fifth minute Fergal Burke point but it would be twenty five minutes before Burke would earn their only other first half score. Casements first half scores came from Paddy Kelly (0.3), Michael Hagan (0.2) and Shane Delargy (0.1) and they maintained almost constant pressure throughout the half but will regret missing a number of gilt edged chances.
The visitors began the second half brightly with a second ’45’ conversion by their top scorer Paddy Kelly. Two points from Aldergrove’s top scorer Fergal Burke and a point from Gerard Mallon narrowed the gap to two points at the end of the third quarter. A Chris O’Kane goal handed the lead to Aldergrove for the first time with eight minutes remaining and it was a lead they were not to lose. Two further Ronan Hanson points gave Aldergrove a four point cushion and they looked to have matters sewn up but Casements launched a late challenge with points from Michael Hagan, Paddy Kelly and substitute BJ Donnelly but the day belonged to Aldergrove.
