McCormick’s late goal barrage seals Antrim win

A late scoring burst by Roisin McCormick saw Antrim home in Sunday’s Ulster Under 16 Camogie Championship against Derry at Portgleone. The match had been delayed for 30 minutes due an electrical storm but when it got going the Antrim girls progressed to the knock stages of the All Ireland Championship with a 5.18 to 1.13 win over a gallant Derry team. However the outcome was not as clear cut as it first appears for it was not until the final 10 minutes when a procession of Antrim goals confirmed the victory.

The first half was a cagey enough affair with only the minimum between the teams throughout the first 30 minutes until the visiting side scored a goal to go 2 points in front at the short whistle. Derry`s scores came mainly from placed balls which Bellaghy`s Roisin Gallagher pushed firmly between the Antrim uprights. In contrast Antrim`s scores came mainly from play with Carla McGarry, Aine Graham and Maeve Kelly being the main threats. The half time score saw Derry leading 1.08 to Antrim`s 0.09.

In the second half Antrim played into the road end at O`Cahan Park Portglenone and started brightly with two further scores from play from the hard working Maeve Kelly. Roisin McCormick fired the hosts in front once more from a placed ball. At this stage Antrim sideline started to ring the changes with the introduction of Katie Laverty and Mary McKillen into the half forward line and the positioning of Roisin McCormick on the edge of the Derry square. This unsettled the Derry defence and the goals started to rain in. Over the next few minutes McCormick hit the net on 4 occasions and another late substitute Maeve Allen added another.

Antrim now progress to play Dublin next Sunday in the quarter final. The host team`s breadth of scorers enabled them to progress with 7 different scorers whereas Derry were over reliant on the stick of Roisin Gallagher. However it`s not only the scorers who should be mentioned – a special word also to the work rate of Caoimhe McNaughton in the Antrim midfield who worked like a Trojan throughout.
