Loughgiel 7-16 Glenariffe 4-13

Loughgiel kept up their unbeaten run in Division 1 of the All County Under 16 Hurling League when they beat Glenariffe in Monday evening’s game at Fr Healy Park, Loughgiel. Conditions were far from ideal for hurling but both teams produced a high scoring contest and though the home side won convincingly in the end for much of the first half the visitors more than matched them. Glenariffe started strongly and were 1-4 to 0-1 ahead after six minutes, the goal coming from corner forward Fintan Leech while Michael O’Boyle got three of the four points. Loughgiel hit back with three goals inside two minutes, two of them from Odhran McGrath and one from Rian McMullan which turned the game firmly in the Shamrocks favour. However the Oisins had another good spell with a series of excellent points from Caolan O’Connor, Michael O’Boyle and Shea McDonnell, plus a goal from O’Connor to retake the lead, but Loughgiel finished the half strongly and with McGarry in fine form on the ‘40’ they came back to lead by a point at the break. (3-7 to 2-9)

A heavy shower of rain just before the interval had made underfoot conditions difficult at the start of the second half but the players coped admirably with it and Loughgiel pushed ahead when McGarry goaled in the opening minute. The centre forward added a couple of points to his tally and midfielder Cathal Hargan also grabbed a couple to take the game away from the Oisins. The scores came thick and fast for the home side but to their credit the Glenariffe boys kept battling away with Caolan O’Connor grabbing a further goal and three points while, Oliver Kearney, Michael O’Boyle, Gabriel Leech and Shea McDonnell gave it their all. However Loughgiel were just too strong throughout the field as they exhibited their wide range of skills to move a step closer to the league title.
