Junior Football Championship gets Under Way Tonight

O’Donnell’s v Sarsfields Pairc MhicDhomhaill 7-00

The Antrim Junior Football Championship gets under way tonight with the meeting of Sarsfield’s and O’Donnell’s at Pairc MhicDhomhaill the one likely to create the greatest interest. Sarsfield’s have had a great season to date, winning Division 3 of the All County league and beating tonight’s opponents, O’Donnell’s at tonight’s venue in a recent league encounter.

Sarsfield’s have beaten nearly all before them on their way to the league title and look capable of holding their own in Division 2 next year. They lost only one game in Division 3 this year away to Pearses and on the way to winning the league they recorded victories home and away over tonight’s opponents so they will start this game as firm favourites.

Cardinal O’Donnell’s won’t be too worried by the tag of underdogs however. In their anniversary season they have been in good form themselves and they have done well to pip a fancied Con Magee’s Glenravel for second place in the league, a win over the Glen’s men at Pairc MhicDhomhaill swinging things in their favour.

Kevin McKiernan and Jim McMenamin could provide the greatest threat for the ‘Paddies’ while O’Donnell’s will be hoping that Padraig Kissock and Ciaran Farran have their shooting boots on tonight. This would be a big scalp for O’Donnell’s and they certainly won’t go down without a fight but league form would suggest a Sarsfield’s win.

St. Malachy’s v Eire Og  Musgrave Park 7-00

Over at Musgrave Park St. Malachy’s take on Eire Og in the other of tonight’s Junior Championship clashes and again I would have to look to league form to predict a winner though league form isn’t always a great pointer come championship time.

St. Malachy’s finished in 5th place in Division 3 this year, just two places above tonight’s opponents. They defeated Eire Og in round 2 of the league recording an impressive 3-13 to 1-7 win at Cherryvale but when the side’s met again in late May it was Eire Og who came out tops by 1-20 to 1-13.

That win would suggest that tonight’s game could go either way and the team on the best form on the night will prevail but I give a tentative not to the boys from the Markets.
