All County Hurling League Division 3 – Report and pics by Michael Morgan
St Paul’s 2-10 Cushendun 4-13
Cushendun kept their good recent run going when they travelled to Shaw’s Road Belfast and beat St Paul’s in Sunday’s Division 3 game. The home team opened the scoring with a 1st minute point, but for the second week in a row, an early goal settled the Cushendun boys. Corner forward Alex McMullan was the man who got the vital score when he latched onto a David Kilgore pass and finished to the net in the 2nd minute and when he doubled his tally with a carbon copy finish a minute later, the Emmets were up and running.
Cushendun moved further ahead with 3 frees from Conleth McNeill (2) and Dominic McQuillian but St Paul’s hit back when Andy McMorrow raised the green flag with a neat finish. Two points followed for the city team before Rory McQuillian and James Morgan answered for the Emmets. On 25 mins, James Farrell capitalised on a mix up in the Cushendun back line and forced the ball home from close range to put his team two clear, but David Kilgore brought the first half to a close with a fine long range point to leave the Emmets trailing by just one at the break (2-06 to 2-07)
After the break Cushendun began to get on top and they went on to dominate the second period as they out-scored their opponents 2-07 to 3 points with the goals coming from full forward Rory McQuillian. St Pauls never gave up the fight but their cause wasn’t helped when they were reduced to fourteen men. Cushendun certainly had the better of things in the second half but both teams played some top class hurling with some great scores, despite the heavy conditions.
