St Enda’s pip Armoy to take the points

O’Neill’s All County Hurling League – Division 2

Armoy 2-13 St Enda’s 1-17

After a somewhat disappointing start to their league campaign St Enda’s made it back to back wins on Sunday when they travelled to Armoy and edged out the home side by a single point in a highly competitive encounter that went right down to the wire. With a strong wind blowing across the pitch, scoring was not easy but both teams coped very well in difficult conditions. The visitors just shaded the opening half and led by a point at half time, and though lead changed a few times in the second period, the Glengormley men hit the front when it mattered most to seal the win.

Joe Maskey gave St Enda’s an early lead with a point from play and the visitors when three clear as the two Ruairis, Convery and Diamond tagged on similar scores. Armoy were soon level, and after Trevor Linton grabbed their first score, Johnny McErlain and Owen Kinney added points in the fifth and sixth minute. St Enda’s came back strongly to dominate the next ten minutes and after Maskey put them back ahead centre forward Cormac Jennings stretched the lead to two with a point from a free. Soon it was out to three when John McGoldrick sent one over in the twelfth minute and three minutes later the gap was six when Jennings fired a free to the Armoy net.

Armoy were in trouble, but Johnny McErlain settled things down with two pointed frees in the seventeenth and eighteenth minutes, and though St Enda’s came back with a point of their own from a Jennings free, a Tommy Burns free and a goal from Trevor Linton in the twenty first minute brought them back to within a point. Two points from St Enda’s right half forward John McGoldrick stretched the visitors’ lead to thee with half time fast approaching, but Armoy hit back with point from Johnny McErlain and Trevor Linton to leave just a point between the sides at the break. The Crossfield wind was making scoring particularly difficult and though St Enda’s had good early pressure they hit four wides in the first four minutes of the new half before midfielder Eoin Conlon showed how it was done to put his team two clear. Big Johnny McErlain pulled one back for Armoy in the thirty eighth minute but the gap was soon out to three when Cillian Jennings fired one over from play and John McGoldrick grabbed one from a free.

Things swung back in Armoy’s favour midway through the half when Johnny McErlain pointed from a free to cut the gap back to two, and the home side went ahead on forty six minutes when PJ McBride fired in his team’s second goal. The lead didn’t last long however as McGoldrick pointed for the Glengormley men to tie things up once again and they went two clear soon afterwards as Cormac Jennings hit two points inside a minute The visitors took a firm grip on the game when McGoldrick added two more, and corner forward Ruairi Crummey one to stretch their lead to five with just six minutes left for play, but Armoy were not finished yet and after Owen Kinney’s goal effort was turned around the post Johnny McErlian pointed the resultant 65 and then added one from a free to keep his team in touch. John McGoldrick eased the pressure on St Enda’s with another well taken point from a free and though McErlain closed the gap again in the final minute of normal time that was as closed as they would get as St Enda’s held on for a one point win.
