Ulster Schools’ Under 14 camogie championship semi-final :
St Pius X Magherafelt 3-3 St Killian’s Garron Tower
A late goal from Mia McErleane won St Pius X Magherafelt a place in the Ulster Schools’ Under 14 camogie championship final after a nail-biting second half in Ballymena yesterday.
And it all followed a first half of missed chances for both sides with the Magherafelt team going in at the break leading by the only scores of the game, points each for Zoe Scullion and Mia McErleane.
St Killian’s dominated the half in terms of possession but created few clear cut chances – and when they threatened the goal, Cliodhna McNabb was in fine form between the posts.
McErleane opened the second half with a point after five minutes before the game really took off with four goals in six minutes.
Firstly Niamh Graham forced the sliotar home from close range to level for St Killian’s only for Freya O’Neill to bang home a goal at the other end.
Graham again took on the St Pius X defence and buried her second goal two minutes later, but once again Magherafelt hit back, a long free into the area fell nicely for Niamh Gavan to slam home with a ground shot.
St Killian’s continued to push forward, but they were also vulnerable on the counterattack as well and it made for a very exciting final quarter.
Niamh Graham completed her hat-trick with ten minutes to go, levelling the game at 3-0 to 2-3 and Úna McAlister popped over the lead point with just two minutes left on the clock.
St Killian’s looked like holding out, but not for the first time Mia McErleane broke the half-back cover to race through and fire high to the roof of the net from 25 metres.
Now it was St Pius X’s turn to hold out and they managed to do that with Nicole McCloy, Ellen Doyle and Torrin and Freya O’Neill standing tall against a final onslaught from the Tower.
It was a terrific second half and probably neither team deserved to lose, but it is St Pius X who have made the decider set for the week after next.
