Junior Feis Shield Quarter Final

Loughgiel Shamrocks 2.15       Conn Magees Glenravel 2.10

Last year’s beaten finalists Loughgiel Shamrocks took their first step towards this year’s Junior Feis final when they beat Con Magees Glenravel in Tuesday evening’s preliminary round at Fr Healy Park.  Loughgiel scored the first 4 points in this game, two of them direct from sideline cuts by OD Laverty, before Neil ‘Vic’ McCann opened Glenravels’ account from a free. It could have been worse for Glenravel had Cormac Scullion not put his body on the line with a point blank save when a goal looked certain. Vic McCann picked up another point for Glenravel but Loughgiel were dominant for the reminder of the half, and the teams went in at half time with Glenravel 9 points to 2 down.

Niall Donnelly was brought on for Odhran McAleenan at half time, and within 1 minute of the restart he had the ball in the back of the Loughgiel net. The Shamrocks responded with 2 points and a goal from Caolan McIlhatton before Kieran McIntyre pointed after good work from Neil Mccann. Niall Donnelly and Martin Scullion sent over 2 more frees to raise Glenravel spirits but Loughgiel struck another goal through corner forward Patty Laverty to put them 2.12 to 1.05 in front.  The visitors were struggling to get to grips with the Shamrocks but Kieran McIntyre showed good form as he slotted over 2 more points from play. Substitute Dean Kerr was straight into the action as he soloed at the Loughgiel defence and taking a heavy shoulder before hand-passing to James Duffin who pointed. Niall Donnelly and Kieran McIntyre hit further points from play to keep the visitors in touch before a long free from the Loughgiel exile Martin Scullion made its way to the back of the Loughgiel net to leave just 4 points in it with 4 minutes left to play.

With a last throw of the dice Cormac Scullion was brought out of goals and put up front, but to no avail as Loughgiel powered on to win by five in the end as they booked a semi-final spot against Armoy. who were 4-14 to 4-10 winners over Cloughmills.
