Gold at the end of the Carey rainbow

O’Neill’s All County Hurling League – Division 3

Carey Faughs 2-16 Creggan 2-9

Carey secured promotion back to Division 2 of the All County Hurling League when they beat Creggan in Tuesday evening’s league encounter in Ballyvoy. In a tough and at times tempestuous encounter a strong finish to the first half and an even stronger start to the second got the Faughs home and though they lost their way badly in the final ten minutes, when they conceded 2-2 without reply, the had done the damage and promotion to Division 2 had long been secured.

The opening quarter saw little between the sides as Daniel McBride (2) and Shea Hunter hit points for the home side while Kevin Rice and Conor McCann (2) came back for the visitors to tie the scores at three apiece after eight minutes. A point from a James ‘Rocket’ Black free and a real beauty from play from inside his own half by centre back Shea Hunter put the home team two ahead by the tenth minute, before a fine strike from a narrow angle by Creggan’s Kevin Rice cut the game back to one. A James Black point from a free for Carey was answered by one from play by Creggan’s Tommy McCann to keep the gap at the minimum entering the final ten minutes of the half, but Carey finished strongly and three on the bounce from Paddy Butler, Rocket Black and John McBride put them 0-9 to 0-5 in front by the time referee Paul McSparran sounded the half-time whistle.12B

Carey sprung from the traps at the start of the second half and before Creggan knew what had hit them the game had slipped from their grasp. Two points in the opening minute from James Black and Martin Gillan were followed a minute later by a goal from Black, the midfielder pulling on a ground ball in around the Creggan square and sending it fizzing to the net. The visitors were on the ropes and by the time they found their feet Carey’s centre forward John McBride had fired in his team’s second goal to stretch the gap to 13 points.

Conor McCann got his team going with pointed frees in the 39th and 41st minutes but Carey hit back with three of their own from Black  (2) and McBride. Things started to get a little heated and several bouts of ‘handbags’ broke out which all but killed the flow of the game. When the hurling broke out again in the final ten minutes it was Creggan who fared the better of the two sides, but though Conor McCann hit 1-2 and Peter Graham a goal it was to be mere consolation as Carey were home and hosed and their path back to Division 2 secured.
