Clooney Gaels may have the division 3 league title already secured but they showed no sign of letting up when they entertained Gort Na Mona on Sunday. Last year’s Junior Champions were expected to provide a stiff test for the home side and they certainly didn’t make things easy but in the end they had little answer to a slick Clooney Gaels side.

First half goals from Donal Graham and Dan O’Neill saw the Ahoghill men in control at the short whistle where they led 2-9 to 0-8 with James O’Connell weighing in with a flurry of points, both from play and from frees.

Despite the best efforts of Mark Rea, Sean Doyle, Padge McHugh and Dessie McLean the West Belfast side were left with a mountain to climb in the second half and despite a Ciaran McMullan goal they never looked like getting back into contention.

James O’Connell continued to display unerring accuracy as he brought his total for the day to 0-13 and his brother P.J. kept the score board ticking with five of his own as the Clooney side ran out winners by 14 points and they look in fine shape as they await an Intermediate championship meeting with St. Brigid’s Cloughmills in Cushendall on the 25th Of August.
