St Mary’s Aghagallon 1-07 Cuchullain’s Dunloy 1-2
St Mary’s Aghagallon completed a South West U12 and U14 double when they defeated Cuchullain’s Dunloy in the U12 final at Clooney today.
With the under-14 league title secured last week with a win over Cargin they continued on the winning trail as they added the under-12 title at the expense of a gallant Cuchullain’s Dunloy.
The St Mary’s lads started the decider as warm favourites but an Oisin McCamphill led Dunloy ensured the path to the podium was not an easy path.
Aghagallon started with an early point as Sean Gowdy raised a white flag before the game clock had reached a minute and an easy passage to the silverware looked assured.
The Dunloy lads had other ideas however and the next few minutes underlined the fact that the Cuchullian’s were to prove strong in defence and net minder Chris Cunning had denied Ethan McNamee before Sean Gowdy gathered the rebound and fisted back over the bar.
Both sides created and spurned a couple of openings in the next few minutes before a well laid counter in which Owen Mullan and Sean Gowdy led the way opened the door for the strong running Owen Maginnis to double the tally.
Dunloy having been on the defensive for most of the opening ten minutes were not to linger in arrears for long however and when Keelin McFerran nipped in to fire to the back of the net they had taken the lead.
The lively corner forward was quick to pounce and fire the leather to the back of the net after Ryan Scott’s interception at the back and Oisin McCamphill’s delivery sent him away to see his side take a one point lead, 1-00 to 0-02.
The St Mary’s lads replied and were back on terms again in the 15th minute via Michael Grogan.
The wing half forward dispatched a 30 meter free between the posts after Ronan Mulholland was fouled and when the strong running Owen Maginnis seized the resultant kick out he was quick to return it over the bar and restore advantage.
Aghagallon dominated the remainder of the half and a last minute Ethan Magee point ensured a 0-05 to 1-00 advantage when the short blast signaled the brief cessation.
Dunloy stared the second half aided by the diagonal breeze and they pressed forward in search of the posts in the early stages.
Oisin McCamphill came close in the opening minute with his long range effort finishing just wide of the target. Aghagallon’s central defender Christopher Hannon then made a timely interception to halt what looked a promising approach in the 23rd minute as Dunloy fought to get back into contention.
Having survived early pressure the St Mary’s lads extended their advantage in the 25th minute as Owen Maginnis strode through to plant the ball between the posts and they were only denied a major score a minute later with Dunloy net minder Sean McCavigan bringing off a timely save.
Ethan McNamee and Owen Maginnis had combined to send Aaron Kerr in on goal only to be thwarted as the Dunloy keeper bravely advanced off his line to smother the shot.
A 29th minute Oisin Mc Camphill point reduced the deficit faced by the hard working Dunloy lads but the Aghagallon reply was swift as the towering Sean Gowdy claimed in the middle before firing over the bar. Owen Maginnis followed up with a goal shortly after and the die was cast.
Aidan Brady had delivered to the middle and after rising high to field, Maginnis finished to the net to crush the aspirations of the brave Cuchullian’s.
An Oisin Mc Camphill 34th minute point raised the young Cuchullain’s hopes but it was to prove their final score as the Aghagallon rear guard stood tall and at the final whistle they had done enough to cross the winning line with a 1-07 to 1-02 winning scoreline.
