Loughgiel (Antrim) 3-7 Glenullin (Derry) 4-6
There was disappointment for Loughgiel in this Bridie McMenamin Ulster Junior championship semi-final in Loughgiel on Sunday when the Shamrock’s third string fell by two points to a strong Glenullin from Derry.
Loughgiel got off to a great start with Annie Lynn’s 45 going all the way to the net after just 55 seconds of play. Annita Harrigan relied with a goal for the visitors
But the home side regained the lead when Anna Connolly raced down the centre and released Annie Lynn for her second goal and a lead of 2-1 to 1-2 after just eight minutes and things were looking good for the Shamrock’s at this stage.
Lynn added a free as i the home side appeared to be taking command despite playing into the strong breeze but slowly the Derry side were growing into the game and helped by two excellent points from midfielder, Tiegan Mullan they began to take control.
They struck with two goals inside three minutes through a rather fortuitous effort from Chloe Mullan after 18 minutes, while the second came when the Harrigans combined with Lauren firing home from close range.
At half time Glenullin led by 3-5 to 2-3 but given the strength of the breeze that lead looked precarious enough and points from Carla McCarry and Joanne Gillan reduced the gap on the restart but Loughgiel were finding difficulty in penetrating a visitors defence with Phillipa Hasson particularly prominent.
Tiegan Mullan’s strong running from midfield was turning defence into attack for Glenullin and providing a scoring threat at the other end and the Derry side struck with an important score as Dearbhla McNicholl found the net in the a 44th minute .
That score gave Glenullin an edge that they maintained to the end though Joanne Gillan scored her fourth point of the game and Annie Lynn completed her hat-trick with a fine goal in the 56th minute.
Anna Connolly tagged on a point and there were a couple of half-chances wasted before Chloe Mullan fired over an insurance point for Glenullin as the game slipped into added time.
