Cargin prove too good for Rossa

Erin’s Own Cargin 3-21 O’ Donavan Rossa 0-10

Cargin’s second string added another brace of points to their tally as they proved too strong for the visiting Rossa in Toome tonight.

The home side nipped quickly out of the start traps and an early Sean Mc Auley goal established intentions right from the outset.

John Mc Nabb, who is more used to residency between the posts for the Erin’s Own first string had opened the scoring with a second minute point before wing half forward Mc Auley took the direct route to the posts after a Tony Scullion delivery to blast to the back of the net.

Rossa opened their account in the 5th minute with a good Jack McGurk point and Conal Mc Donald added another shortly after but the home side hadmoved 1-04 to 0-02 ahead at the first water break.

Odhran Mc Guckin raised an 11th minute point with an indiscretion on the advancing Brian Og Devlin firmly punished when John Mc Nabb despatched the resulting award between the posts.

Rossa battled hard to get into the game with Michael Close impressive in the central zone but the city men were finding the posts an elusive target and a long range point from the lively Shane Gribbon and back to back by John Mc Nabb and Ronan Devlin saw the home side move 07 to 0-02 ahead.

A foul on Liam Carr opened the way for Michael Close to add a point for the visitors but Cargin finished the opening period strongly and late points from Peadar Mc Keever and another from corner back Brian Og Devlin ensured a 1-09 to 0-03 interval advantage.

Rossa needed a good start to the second half but in the event it was the home side who were quicker into stride and an opening minute point by PJ Quinn was quickly added to when Peadar McKeever and John Mc Nabb following suit.

Rossa were creating but failing to convert opportunities before a Tony Scullion opened the way for Odhran Mc Guckin to despatch between the posts and extend the Cargin lead.

The visitors kept battling however and back to back points by the hard grafting Patrick Moyes and Conal Mc Donald offered hope.

Such hope was soon extinguished however as replacement Shay Bovill pointed to add to Cargin’s lead before Conan Kennedy and Peadar Mc Keever combined to open the way for Ryan Mc Kiernan to fire to the back of the net.

The big man back in the fold after a lengthy spell recovering from injury finished in style and with Odhran Mc Guckin following with a points the die was well cast.

Rossa kept battling to the end and were rewarded with back to back points from Liam Carr and Lorcan Fitzsimmons with David Mc Elhone grabbing a point for the home side before Sean Mc Auley helped himself to a second major.

The wing half forward was upended in the square and when the man in charge pointed to the spot he took responsibility himself and calmly slotted the leather into the corner of the net.

PJ Quinn and Michael Mc Enhill swapped points in the closing minute with the long blast which quickly followed signalling a 3-21 to 0-10 win for the Cargin men.
