St Agnes made it two from two with a win over Eire Og in the GYMCO JFC Group two when they came from behind to stage a strong finish and overcome the challenge of Eire Og. Thehome team got off to a flying start when Brian Crossan finished a great move to the net and Ronan Carroll quickly followed up with a point. Éire Óg , soon after, replied when a long ball found Conall Smyth whose well placed shot found the corner of the net despite the best efforts of keeper “Bob” Carroll. Two pointed frees from the Ógs talisman, Conor Mc Kenna, followed by a point by the home team’s midfielder, Shane Moran, made the score 1-2 each. A point from James Toal left the away team with a one-point lead at the first water break.

In the second quarter, which was evenly contested, the sides exchanged three points each with S Moran, R Carroll (free) and Cormac Mc Bride converting for the black and whites. An off the ball incident was spotted by the St Comgall’s umpire and after consultation with the referee Éire  Óg’s Gareth Drake was dismissed. Two points from C Mc Kenna, one a free, and one from J Toal left the half time score Éire Óg 1-6 St Agnes 1-5.

Half time sub, James Campbell , converted a 45 to level the scores. Éire Óg then had their best spell of the game scoring four points on the bounce, three from that man Mc Kenna (all frees) and one from Conor Erskine with the Aggies now looking in trouble.

A goal from Ronan Carroll and points from Colin Clarke and Conal Turley steadied the ship and a one-point lead 2-8 to 1-10 at the second water break.

The final quarter proved to be the Aggies “purple patch” and with the extra man beginning to tell they hit for home coming down the stretch. A J Campbell point, a penalty expertly executed by Ronan Carroll after the same man was deemed to be fouled, another 45 from J Campbell, a point from newcomer C Clarke and a brace from C Turley completed the home team’s scoring. The Óg’s only reply a free from C Mc Kenna and a late point from Fergal Gribben.

To come from four down to seven in front at the final whistle was a testament to an overall, solid team performance from St Agnes. A very pleasing result for the management but valuable lessons learnt by the team that in championship football nothing can be taken for granted.
