GYMCO JFC Group 2
St Agnes 5-14 St Malachy’s 3-6
St. Agnes qualified for the semi-finals of the GYMCO JFC following this fine 13 point win over St. Malachy’s at Pairc Una today. The home team got of to a bright start with a pointed free from Ronan Carroll, a goal from Brian Crossan and a point from Declan Mc Larnon.
St Malachy’s reply was swift and following a mix up in the Aggies defence, Aiden Connor raised a green flag and the same man pointed minutes later.
St Agnes didn’t panic and from there to the first half water break scored 1-4 without reply, a Peter Lavery goal, Shane Moran point and two pointed frees from Ronan Carroll leaving the score line 2-5 to 1-1 for the Black and Whites. On the resumption a fine goal from Brian Crossan stretched the Aggies lead but another poor error in the defence resulted in a goal from St Mal’s Karl Mc Kavana. A Ronan Carroll point and a brace from Conal Turley followed by two points from Paul Devine kept the ‘Markets Men’ in touch.
Half Time score St Agnes 3-8 St Malachy’s 2-3.
Declan Mc Larnon and James Halleron with points a piece opened the 2nd half scoring but inexplicably the Aggies defence opened up like ‘The Red Sea’ to let Karl Mc Kavana finish to the net for his second goal. However, as the game progressed the home team’s greater control of the ball and the match resulted in a fine goal from captain Conal Turley and two points from livewire half forward Peter Lavery.
Score 2nd half water break; St Agnes 4-12 St Malachy’s 3-4
In the final quarter St Agnes used their full quota of subs and another goal from Peter Lavery and two points from Ronan Carroll eased them to the final whistle. St Mal’s never gave up and added two points from Gerard Mc Gleenan and Mark Connolly.
The St Agnes management, whilst pleased with 5-14 will be concerned with the concession of 3 soft goals and know their defence will have to be much tighter in the forthcoming semi- final.
