Oisins seal their place in the top half of the table

Antrim Hurling League Division 2

Glenariffe Oisins 2-21 Gort na Móna 1-14

Glenariffe made it into the top half of the Division 2 table when they beat Gort na Móna in the last game before the split on Sunday in Waterfoot. The Oisins had ten points to spare in the end, but a strong finish, which saw them hit the last six points of the game, may have made the scoreboard look a little flattering.

It was score for score in the early minutes as scores by Odhran Gillan and Seanie McIntosh were cancelled out by Dessie McLean and Ryan Cahill for the Turf Lodge men, but when Shea McDonnell grabbed a Glenariffe goal on six minutes they began to get the upper hand. Three of the next four points came from the visitors though as two by McClean and one by Nathan Gibson, in reply to just one from the Oisins Shea McDonnell left just a point in it, but points from Donal Kearney and Dan McKillop, and a goal from Odhran Gillan helped the home side to a four point lead at the interval.

Alex O’Boyle got the first point of the second half, and though McClean pulled on back at the other end, one each from O’Boyle and McKillop stretched the gap out to six. The Gorts were staying in touch as Conor Boyd and McClean picked off points but the home side were able to counter on each occasion and by the end of the third quarter they were eight ahead.

A Ryan Cahill point and a goal from midfielder Declan Hughes gave the Gorts new hope and suddenly there was only four between the sides, but they would only add one more point in the last ten minutes, while Glenariffe hit eight of the next nine to seal a comprehensive win.
