Antrim start well with win over Derry

Lidl National Football League – Division 4A

Antrim 2-16 Derry 1-8

Antrim got their National League Division 4 campaign off to a good start at Davitt Park, Belfast on Sunday when they beat visitors Derry by 2-16 to 1-8.

Antrim were on top from the start and after Orlaith Prenter scored their opening point. Cathy Carey added one and Prenter added her second of the game, and they stretched their lead to five as Lara Dahunsi and Grannie McLaughlin chipped in with points apiece to go 0-5 to 0-0 clear.

Derry opened their account just before the water break and the visitors fared better in the second quarter, though two more points from Cathy Carey, and one apiece from Dahunsi and Graine McLaughlin had Antrim 0-9 to 0-5 clear at half time.

A goal by Orlaith Prenter just after the restart put the Saffrons in control, and though Derry responded with a point soon afterwards, three on the trot from the home side through McLaughlin, Prenter and Carey gave them a nine point cushion.

Derry kept plugging away and their efforts were rewarded when Megan Devine got in for a late goal, but Antrim responded well and Lara Dahunsi capped a fine performance with Antrim’s second goal.
