McQuillan’s late penalty earns Saints a share of the points

Antrim Under 17 League – Div 1

Con Magees 1-7 All Saints 1-7

A goal from a penalty with the last kick of the game by All Saints corner forward Ciaran McQuillan earned his team a share of the spoils in Sunday morning’s Antrim Under 17 Football League Division 1 game at Fr Maginn Park, Glenravel.

In a close fought first half, played in poor underfoot conditions, the home team got a lucky break in first half injury time with the teams level on 3 points each when a ball into the All Saints penalty area was deflected to the net by a defender to give the Con Magees a 1-3 to 0-3 half time lead.

The home side dominated the first ten minutes of the second half but shot five wides in a row. Declan McKeown finally found the target to put them four ahead and when half-back Eamonn Ward added another point from play to stretch the gap to five they looked to be home and hosed.

All Saints however began to win a bit more possession and they closed the gap to four with just five minutes of normal time to play. McQuillan closed the gap to three entering injury time and when an All Saints player was hauled down in the large ‘square’ three minutes later, he kept his cool to slot home the resultant penalty to earn his team a share of the spoils.

Division 1 round-up

In the other games in Division 1 Cargin had a 4-13 to 3-6 win over last season’s U17 Championship runners-up St Paul’s in Toome, while Moneyglass travelled to the Bog Meadows and came away with a share of the points against St Gall’s on a 3-8 to 2-11 scoreline. In the other game in the group last year’s Under 17 champions Aghagallon were beaten by a point by St Brigid’s at Musgrave Park in a highly entertaining and exciting game which ended 3-14 to 3-13 in the home team’s favour.
