Gaelic Football & Rugby-a match made in Heaven

St. Mary’s GAC, Ahoghill had Ballymena Rugby club as guests on Saturday morning as young players from both clubs were given the opportunity to try out each other’s sport. Coaches from St. Mary’s put both sets of primary school children through a variety of Gaelic training drills and then it was the turn of the Ballymena Rugby coaches to take them through the various Rugby drills.

Chairman, Gerard McGarry welcomed the young Rugby players and the large group of parents that accompanied them to Cloney and showed them around the club’s facilities which are amongst the best in the county.

“Everything you see before you is fully owned by the club, the result of years of sustained work by many members/volunteers and we have ambitious plans to further develop our facilities. While we have many hard working member, an area that the club wants to concentrate on over the next few years is the recruitment of new members from the greater Ahoghill area hence we have reached out to Ballymena Rugby club. Our priority is to provide a sporting outlet for the children we have and those who will join us in the future, developing their abilities both on and off the field. |Hopefully today will spark an interest in Gaelic football in some of your children which we can develop in the coming weeks and months” said the chairman.

The Saffron Gael attended late in the session and grabbed some action shots from the Rugby drills and it was clear that those taking part were thoroughly enjoying themselves and no doubt picking up new skills which will benefit them in the future.
