Davitt’s win tough battle with Ardoyne

ACFL Division 2 Round 2

Ardoyne 2-7 vs Davitts GAC 1-15

Davitt’s travelled over to Ardoyne on Sunday and came away with a five point win as new manager Sean McKenna’s men remain unbeaten.

The Falls Road men made a good start when unanswered points from Stephen McGivern, goalkeeper Aaron Slane and McGivern again, put them three clear after ten minutes. When Marcus Toner opened the gap to four it was beginning to look a little one sided, but Ardoyne came back with a bang and Kevin Lynch found an opening and fired the ball home to cut the gap back to just a point.

Davitt’s goalkeeper Aaron Slane ended with two points from frees

However Davitt’s took that setback in their stride and were soon back on top, and with their forward line running at the opposition defence they hit four without reply through Tony McGrattan (2), Stephen McGivern and Daniel Wallace to regain control of the match. The home team responded with a point from Aidan McNeill, but Davitt’s pushed on and with McGrattan if fine form they opened up a 0-9 to 1-2 lead at the break

Ardoyne started the second half with a bit more fire in the belly, and Gary McKernan cut the gap back to three with a well taken point, but Davitt’s found a reply through McGivern to restore that four point cushion. Two quick points from Aidan McNeill and Gary McKernan really brought the game to life.

With just two points separating the sides the game was up for grabs again, but entering the final quarter Davitt’s struck a telling blow when Conor John Sullivan fired the ball to the Ardoyne net to put his side back firmly in the driving seat. A well taken point from Marcus Toner stretched the lead to seven and it was clear the home side had a mountain to climb. When Declan McCormick found the Davitt’s net there was renewed hope for the Ardoyne men but Davitt’s steadied the ship and in a sometime fractious finish they held on to seal the win with two Marcus Toner points and another one from goalkeeer Aaron Slane putting the icing on the cake.
