Four first half goals set St Paul’s up for convincing win

Antrim Football League – Division 2

St Paul’s 4-12 St Teresa’s 0-11

Four first half goals set St Paul’s up for victory over West Belfast neighbours St Teresa’s at Shaw’s Road on Wednesday evening and maintained their unbeaten run, plus top spot in the league table.

Paul McGoldrick had given St Teresa’s an early lead with a point, but a superbly finished goal by corner forward Colin Duffy, following a great pass by Don Burns, gave St Paul’s a lead they would not lose.

Their second goal on 14 minutes from full forward Liam McKenna gave them a firm hold on the game but St Teresa’s had their best spell of the game to claw back three points in five minutes as Niall McCann grabbed a point following a ‘mark’ and John Mallon sent over two frees.

However St Paul’s took control during a dominant second quarter and playing fast flowing football they grabbed a further 2-3 to to lead by 4-5 to 0-5 at half time.

Niall McCann pulled a point back for St Teresa’s early in the second half but when the home side came back with three on the trot from Liam McLornan, Liam McKenna and Patrick Doyle it was clear there was no way back for the Glen Road men.

To their credit St Teresa’s kept plugging away and three Niall McCann points from play could have been more, had it not been for a couple of sharp saves from St Paul’s netminder Jack McAufield. However St Paul’s were always in control and they now face a home game against All Saint’s Ballymena in their next outing in what should be a cracking game
