St. Paul’s pay the penalty as McMeel earns Moneyglass a point

ACFL Division 2

Moneyglass 1-12 St. Paul’s 3-6

Table toppers St. Ergnat’s and St. Paul’s fought out a hard earned draw at Marian Hill last night, the first point that the Moneyglass men have dropped in the league. It was visitors St. Paul’s who are well placed themselves, who made all the first half running and the visitors looked to be on their way to victory when they led 3-4 to 0-5 at the half way staged.

St. Ergnat’s had looked sluggish and off the pace during the opening thirty minutes but they rallied after the break and showed just why they top the table as they reeled in the opposition. Things became a bit heated during the second half with referee, Paul Burns issuing a number of cards with Jimmy McMeel’s late equaliser keeping the home side’s unbeaten record intact.

Colm Duffin shot the league leaders into an early lead as he fired over in the 1st minute but St. Paul’s came back strongly and points from Patrick Doyle James Farrel and Liam McKernna and a goal from the impressive Patrick Doyle had them in the driving seat by the 21st minute and the home side looked rattled.

Colm Duffin raised their second flag from a 22nd minute free but the momentum was very much with the Shaw’s Road side as they replied with their second goal in the 25th minute. Liam McKenna added a point before Dermot McErlain 0-2 and Shay Madden hit late points for St. Ergnat’s but a Marcus Munce goal just before the break had St. Paul’s in the driving seat.

Moneyglass showed a marked improvement and looked a much more focused side on the restart and points from Seanchann Duffin, Sean Kelly and Duffin again had the gap down to five by the 8th minute.

Liam McKenna replied with one for the visitors but Moneyglass were now moving the ball around with greater purpose and slowly they started to eat into the St. Paul’s lead as Dermot McErlain, and Colm Duffin (0-2 1f) added points to leave just one in it with 13 minutes remaining.

Munce moved the visitors one ahead again with only their second score of the half with two minutes of normal time remaining and they were then handed the opportunity to tie matters up when they were awarded a penalty which resulted in Sean Kelly receiving a ‘Black’ card but failed to score from the spot and McMeel’s late point left it all square, much to the relief of the home side who will feel they got out of jail on this occasion.
