Early goals the key as Cargin remain unbeaten

ACFL Division 1 Reserve

Erin’s Own Cargin 2-16 Casement’s Portglenone 0-10

Early goals proved the key to success as Cargin remained unbeaten following a win gained over the visiting Casement’s men in Toome on Friday evening.

Enda McGrogan found the net courtesy of a slick Kieran Close delivery in the 10th minute was followed on the way to the net shortly into the second quarter.

It was the turn of Kieran Close to add a second major just in to the second quarter as PJ Quinn and John McNabb combined to open the way at the end of a wind assisted half the home side had earned a 2-08 to 0-04 advantage.

Portglenone, with the breeze behind them in the second half adopted the long delivery to provide a way back but the home side, with the excellent Conan Johnston leading the way was proving difficult to penetrate.

Although the Bannsider’s brought their tally to reach double figures the home side never looked in real danger and at conclusion they remained comfortable winners.

Having gained a full return of the points when they visited Portglenone in the early phase of the reserve league Cargin started this one as favourites on Friday evening.

Cargin had the breeze in their favour as the game got under way and they opened on the positive with early scores from Kieran Close (0-2) and a long range Eunan Quinn effort.

Casement’s replied when Patrick Graffin split the posts after 8 minutes but this provoked a quick response from their hosts as Eoin Coyle sent John MC Nabb away to split the posts.

Kieran Close collected the kick out and he quickly transferred to Enda Mc Grogan who fired past Jordan Hyndman to ensure an early 1-04 to 0-1 lead for the Toome men.

Casement’s doubled their account when Michael Donnelly opened the way for Dermot Magill to send between the posts but Cargin were quick to reply as Enda McGrogan raised white before Brendan Laverty made swift progress on the right wing to add another.

The home side had nipped into a 1-05 to 0-02 lead as the game at the end of the opening quarter and they put themselves in a strong position when John McNabb opened the way for Ciaran Close to fire to the corner of the net and ensure a 2-07 to 0-02 advantage.

Casements returned fire in the 25th minute as Conor Magee split the posts and Dermot Magill came close to finding the net shortly after but his lobbed delivery was just outside the post.

Ronan Kelly added to the visitors tally with a smart 28th minute point but the home side were to have the last say as a 30th minute David Johnston point ensured a 2-08 to 0-04 half time advantage.

With the breeze behind them in the second half the Bannsider’s needed a good start but in the event it was their hosts who were first on target.

John Mc Nabb opened their account when he sent a 30 metre free between the posts  following a foul on Eunan Quinn and the full forward added another a couple of minutes later following a similar indiscretion on Brendan Laverty.

Casement’s opened their second half account in the 36th minute through Aiden Mc Aleese but the home side were quick to make reply as replacement Shay Bovill split the posts and David Johnston followed with another as Cargin continued to dictate matters.

The home held a healthy 2-12 to 0-05 at the end of the third quarter but back to back frees from Aiden McAleese gave the visitors a glimmer of hope.

A long range point from Ronan Kelly increased but their reliance on the long delivery was not paying much in the way of dividends as the home side’s rear guard stood firm.

PJ Quinn sent John McNabb away to split the posts for the home side and although Brain McManus replied at the other end a strong Mark Keegan run opened the way for McNabb to raise another and it looked over at this stage.

Michael Donnelly added to the visitor’s account when he delivered between the posts from distance but Conan Johnston made quick reply for the home side.

The excellent PJ Quinn had the last say on proceedings as his smart collection and finish yielded a 59th minute point to ensure a 2-16 to 0-10 winning scoreline for the Cargin men.
