Cuchullian’s Dunloy 2-06 Erin’s Own Cargin 4-20
A win for Cargin over Dunloy in the under-15 football championship sets up a local derby affair in the next round as the Erin’s Own lads are set to play hosts to near neighbours Kickham’s Creggan.
The Toome side had fared more than well in the league and with just a single defeat endured to date they travelled to Dunloy in their first round championship date as firm favourites and indeed it only took a few minutes for them to get on top.
Patrick O’ Neill who was to stamp authority in the vital central sector was first to give employment to the scoreboard attendant with a 1st minute point.
The strong running midfielder who was to feature with more than a few strong solo advances was to end up leading scorer on the night.
Dunloy were thwarted a couple of times early in the game but Cargin were soon on top when they got their first major with ten minutes on the clock.
The winners lost Ewan Mc Laverty, early in the game, but his replacement Oisin Mc Guckin was to fill the void more than well showing maturity beyond his 11 years.
The early goal established supremacy for the visitors although the home side got on the board with a well delivered Jay Mc Alonan point such raised hope within the green and gold
Cargin were quick to return to the offensive however and back to back points from Darragh O’ Boyle and Patrick O’ Neill preceded a second Fiontan Hardy major following an impressive linked approach ensured the visitors had earned 2-05 to 0-01 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The home side did look to gain in composure and indeed with Aaron Doherty and Seamus Mc Mullan striving to get them on a positive route access though a Cargin rear guard in which Niall Quinn was leading by example was proving difficult.
In the event Seamus Mc Mullan was to gain access in the 25th minute to find the net their visitors had bagged a couple more majors at the other end via the strong running mid fielder Jack O’ Neill and Fiontan O’ Donnell.
Cargin were to endure another injury crisis in the last minutes of the period with the loss of the impressive Darragh O’ Boyle with a head injury replaced by Colm Loughran.
Cargin continued to call the tune in the last phase of the opening period to take respite owning a 4-06 to 1-02 advantage.
The Toome lads started the second half with an early point from the wily Ryan Mc Peake with Patrick O’ Neill despatching a free kick between the posts a few minutes later.
The home side gained in momentum for a time with back to back points from Anthony Hampson and Donnach Lavery to hinting at possible recovery.
However Cargin soon gained the upper hand again with point from the eye catching Jack O’ Neill and the strong running Patrick O’ Neill and raced away to a 4-13 to 1-04 lead.
Cillian Scullion bagged a couple of point to add to the Cargin total and Patrick O’ Neill followed suit with back to back minors following typical strong running solo advancement from deep in defence to finish in style.
Oisin Mc Callion pulled on back for Dunloy with a well worked 56th minute major following points at the other end despatched by Patrick O’ Neill and Fiontan Hardy.
The Mc Callion goal was to prove the last employment for the score board attendant with Cargin breasting the line at 4-20 to 2-06 to establish a date with their near neighbours in the next round.
