Cargin move tops after win over St. Gall’s

ACFL Division One Reserve (round three)

Erin’s Own Cargin 4-11 St Gall’s 1-07

Cargin moved top of the division one reserve league when they defeated previously unbeaten St Gall’s at a sodden, dreary Toome on Friday evening last.

Erin’s Own were quickly out of the traps with Kieran Close leading the attack as the nimble corner forward raised a treble of white flags in the opening five minutes to establish the trend for the opening period with Charlie Mc Cann following with another fine effort.

St Gall’s, having missed a couple of early chances got off the mark in the 13th minute when corner forward Kevin Bradley despatched a close range free between the posts.

It provoked a quick response however and Odhran Molloy combined with Benen Kelly and Enda McGrogan to finish to the net in style.

The home side continued to press with Brendan Laverty, Benen Kelly, and Sean Og Quinn taking every opportunity to move forward and Kieran Close added a couple more points.

Cargin led 2-06 to 0-01 as the end of the half approached and after Niall Falloon raised white for the visitors, the home side hit back with a vengeance.

Shea Laverty’s delivery sent Benen Kelly through on goal and he found Kieran Close in space but the nimble corner man was brought to ground and a penalty was awarded.

Conhuir Johnston fired the spot kick to the corner of the net to ensure a more than healthy 3-06 to 0-02 advantage at the short whistle.

The visitors needed a better start to the second half and Niall Falloon added an early point to their tally but the home side were quick to reply.

Shea Laverty with another excellent kick out found Benen Kelly and he combined with Hugh O’ Donnell and Kieran Close in approach to release Benen Kelly who finished in style to make it 4-07 to 0-03.

It was as good as over at this stage as Conhuir Johnston and St. Gall’s replacement C Ferguson exchanged points.

Cargin finished as they had started and Diarmuid Quinn, Shane Gribbin, and Ben Dobbin were on target but the visitors were to have the last say as the hard working Niall Falloon found the net in time added and followed with a point to put a better look on the final scoreline.
