The ability to break at speed and take their scores was the difference in this ACFL Division 2 Reserve local derby in Glenavy on Friday night as St. James Aldergrove claimed the bragging rights with a one point victory over St. Joseph’s Glenavy.

Ther home side got off to a good start and led 0-4 to 0-0 after 8 minute with Peter Treanor, Fergal Green, Niall McCann, with a massive long range effort and Finn Shannon the men on target.

A couple in reply from Fionn McDonagh and Sean Fay had the gap back to two by the 14th minute but Dominic Gallagher from a long range free and Finn Shannon restored the Chapel Hill side’s four point advantage as the game swung from end to end.

The momentum had been with St. Joseph’s up to this point but Aldergrove came back strongly in the later stages of the half, out-scoring their opponents 0-4 to 0-1 to lead by a point at half time. James Trowlen led the way with two points and Aidan Reilly struck a fine point to leave St. James 0-7 to 0-6 ahead at the break

It was St. James Aldergove who continued to dictate terms on the restart, sitting deep and breaking with speed and efficiency and they had moved six clear by the 11th minute as they hit five unanswered points with James Trowlen continuing to provide the greatest scoring threat.

A couple of points from Finn Shannon and Fergal Green finally got Glenavy going and when Aldergrove lost a man to a second ‘Yellow’ the Chapel Hill men seemed to be gaining momentum and Finn Shannon struck a good point to close the gap further.

James Trowlen pointed a free to move his side six in front and Aldergrove looked home and hosed but Glenavy finished the game strongly with Niall McCann and Finn Shannon cutting the deficit to four with time almost up.

The Chapel Hill men threw everything at their opponents and were rewarded with a late goal but it came too late to affect the result.

This win keeps Aldergrove up there with the league leaders, Sarsfields and Con Magee’s but Glenavy will feel they might have had something from this game but their second half come-back came too late.
