Saffron Gael’s Elaine Kelly speaks to Cathy Carey, one of the Moneyglass managers following another Feile success at the weekend in Sligo.
“St Ergnats Moneyglass have picked up their 5th All Ireland Feile title in 6 years (4 girls and 1 boys) after a tough fought day in Tubbercurry, Sligo, on Saturday.
Despite the windy conditions, the group stages kicked off with a win against Carlow side Old Leighlin but the next game ended in defeat against the team (Gaultier) they would meet again in the final. The girls picked themselves up at this point and put in a devastating display of attacking play in the third game against hosts, CT Gaels.
Finishing second in the group qualified the team for the Cup semi-finals and we were drawn against Cooley Kickhams of Louth.
A very strong first half display by the whole team set the girls up in a good position going in at half time. Cooley staged a comeback in the latter stages of the game, but the Moneyglass defence kept it tight until the final whistle.
Gaultier of Waterford were to be the final opponents and it turned out to be a huge battle with both teams putting in mammoth efforts to get over the line. Fortunately, the Moneyglass girls stood the strongest and held a point lead in the final minutes to win by the smallest of margins.
Sheer delight and relief was on show as parents and supporters flooded the pitch to congratulate the girls.
Many players stood up at different stages of the day but as a whole team effort, must be commended for how they represented themselves, their families and club on another historic day for Moneyglass”.
