Con Magees edge out Dunloy in MFL

Antrim Minor Football League – Division 1

Com Magee Gaels 1-05 Dunloy 1-04

Con Magee Glenravel edged out Dunloy in Sunday’s opening game of the Minor Football League Division 1, winning a low scoring game by a single point.

Hero of the hour for the Glenravel boys was goalkeeper Declan Carey who made four outstanding saves throughout the game to deny what looked like certain goals each time.

A Harry Fyfe goal in the early stages gave Con Magees a great start and with points from Colla Ward and Peadar McDonnell they held the upper hand. Dunloy came back strongly and boosted by a goal from Oisin McCamphill they fought back to level matters at 1-3 apiece at half time, McCallin and Charlie Cunning getting the points.

If the first half was low scoring then the second half was almost non-existent as the Storm Kathleen’s high winds made shooting very difficult.

Sean McKay put Con Magees back in front with a pointed free early in the half and it was twenty minutes later when Dunloy equalised. It looked like ending in a draw but McKay got his second score from a place ball late in the game to give the home team the win.

In the other games in Division 1 St John’s beat Creggan at Corrigan Park by 3-11 to 3-07, while St Brigid’s and Aghagallon shared the points after a highly entertaining game that ended on 2-10 apiece. The game between last year’s county champions St Paul’s and Cargin was postponed
