Antrim LGFA – Minor League at Glenavy
Antrim 2-07 Down 2-06
Pics by Niall Mitchell
Antrim minors returned to winning ways coming out on top by a single point in a game that could have easily been lost.
The Saffrons dominated the early possession but some wayward finishing that was to haunt them all day left the them neck and neck with the Mourne girls. Keela McAllister opened the Antrim account with a goal and a point in quick succession, but some outstanding goalkeeping from Erin Gough in the Down nets kept the home team at bay while impressive work from Holly Donnelly and Cara Donnelly saw the Down girls lead at the break by two points.
Aoife Fitzsimons with a point and Hanna Donaghy goal being the only other scores for a wasteful home side.
Antrim 2-02 Down 2-04
Antrim began the second half quickly and points from Aoibhean Monaghan, Anna McGarry and Amelie Annett gave them the lead in worsening conditions.
Down to their credit refused to back down and with Gough making at least 3 goal saving stops in the second half alone it looked likely that the visitors would snatch at least a draw.
However with little under 5 minutes remaining Aoibhean Monaghan held her nerve to point Antrim in front and take the win. Down had two very difficult chances to snatch a draw but in horrendous conditions they were unable to take the opportunity.
Antrim now top the group with 3 wins from 4 games and await a tough and talented Armagh team in a fortnight’s time.
