Éire Óg delivered a stunning second-half performance at Woodlands to completely overturn a half-time deficit and run out commanding 11-point winners over St Brigid’s Cloughmills in this Antrim Junior Football Championship clash. Despite dominating early possession, Éire Óg found themselves trailing at the break against a resolute Cloughmills defence, but an explosive restart and a crucial black card turned the game entirely on its head.
Éire Óg started the game brightly, controlling the early tempo. They raced into a two-point lead inside the first two minutes, courtesy of sharp scores from Eoin Dixon and Conall Smyth. However, Cloughmills quickly reminded their opponents of their counter-attacking threat. On four and a half minutes, PJ McBride broke through to rattle the back of the net, giving his side a 1-0 to 0-2 lead against the run of play. Éire Óg responded steadily, relying on the trusty boot of Conor Dixon, who slotted over two frees in the 7th and 14th minutes to keep the scoreboard ticking. Midway through the half, Cloughmills pressed for a second goal, but the Éire Óg goalkeeper, Jamie King, pulled off a vital save on 11 minutes to keep the deficit manageable. As the half drew to a close, Cloughmills began to find their shooting boots. They grabbed a point, followed by a brilliantly worked team score finished by Aidan McNeill on 28 minutes. A final point from Conor Kelly just before the whistle left Éire Óg trailing 0-04 to 1-03 at the break.
Whatever was said in the Éire Óg huddle at half-time worked wonders. They emerged for the second period with devastating intent, wiping out the Cloughmills lead within three and a half minutes through a free from Conor Dixon and a fine point from Dermot Burns. The defining moment of the match arrived just a minute later. A brilliantly worked passing move tore through the Cloughmills defence, allowing Dermot Burns to crash the ball to the net, putting his side 1-6 to 1-3 ahead. Things went from bad to worse for Cloughmills on six minutes when Dara Watterson was shown a black card for a deliberate pull-down.
With a numerical advantage, Éire Óg showed no mercy. They hit an unanswered barrage of points over the next ten minutes, with scores coming from all angles. Points from Conall Smyth and Malachy McIvor were quickly followed by a converted free from Conor Dixon, a well-worked team point finished by Eoin Dixon, and another point from Conor Dixon by the 13.5-minute mark. By the 19th minute, when Dermot Burns added another point to his personal tally, the game was effectively over as a contest. The Éire Óg marksman, Conor Dixon, continued to punish Cloughmills’ indiscretions, adding two more frees on twenty five and thirty five minutes.
Cloughmills who were making their debut in the competition, were completely starved of possession and pinned back by a relentless Éire Óg press. Despite their best efforts they managed just a single score in the second half—a pointed free from Pj McBride in the 26th minute. After a frustrating first half where they failed to capitalise on their lion’s share of possession, Éire Óg’s second-half blitz was a masterclass in clinical finishing and exploiting a numerical advantage. Cloughmills will take heart from their superb defensive shape in the first 30 minutes, but they had no answer to the pace and power of Éire Óg after the turnaround.
