Carey take the honours in Feystown

O’Neill’s All County Hurling League – Division 3CRLL1527

Shane O’Neill’s Glenarm 2-4 Carey Faughs 3-25

A sun kissed Pairc Ui fhearsithe in Feystown provided the backdrop for this, the first competitive meeting of these two teams for some years. Last season the Faughs were playing their hurling in Division 2 and only lost their place in the division on the last day of the season while Glenarm had competed, and competed well it has to be said, in the combined Division 3/4. On top of that both had been narrowly beaten in the respective championship finals at the end of last season, Carey by Sarsfields in the Intermediate decider and Glenarm by Gort na Mona in the Junior showdown.

The opening twenty mins suggested there wasn’t going to be much between the two sides as scores for the hosts by Dylan McLaughlin 0-2, Sean O`Hare 1-0 Darren Hamill 1-0 were answered by Carey’s John McBride 1-1, Gerry McBride 1-0, Conor McBride 0-1, Sean McLaughlin 0-1, James Black 0-3. However towards the end of the first half the visitors began to impose themselves upon the home team as they pegged on a further six pts to extend their half time lead to nine. (Glenarm 2-3 Carey Faughs 2-12.)

Carey began the second half where they left off in the first, and with a light wind assisting them they added 1-14 to Glenarm’s solitary point during a totally dominant second half to run out easy winners by 3-25 to 2-4Glenarm, with the return of six players out through injury/university/work would seek to show much improvement in the coming weeks, and in truth they will not meet many stronger opponents during the season.

Best for the hosts, in goal Liam Mulvenna made some heroic stoppages to deny the visitors on numerous occasions, Hugh Pat McNeill, Jake Hamilton, and Sean Moran in defence, while up front Dylan McLaughlin showed some signs of return to his sharpness.

Carey on the other hand were just sharper, faster, and more clinical with their execution all over the field, and on this showing could be hard to topple in the league under their new manager Aidan Delargy.

Referee on the day was Seamus Burns, who played his part in allowing a fast, free flowing game for the delight of the many supporters who turned up.
