Ulster Schools’ camogie – Under 14 championship
St Killian’s Garron Tower 5-3 St Paul’s Kilrea 2-0
St Killian’s got their under 14 camogie campaign off to a good start with victory over St Paul’s Kilrea in Glenravel on Monday afternoon.
St Paul’s had already played and lost narrowly to Loreto Kilrea the previous week. But they got off to a very sluggish start with Monique O’Boyle and Sine Woodhouse delivering direct ball to the edge of the square where firstly Niamh Graham and then Clodagh McMullan bagged goals for the Tower.
After that with Shannon Bradley and Bronagh McEldowney settling the defence, St Paul’s came more into the game and captain Emma McCloskey drove them forward. However the Tower half-back line proved very difficult to pass during that opening half with Ellie McKinley and Orla Donnelly prominent.
As the half wore on St Killian’s created more space for their full-forward and Niamh Graham obliged by completing her hat-trick and adding a point.
Just before half-time Úna McAllister who had been moved into the forward line sent in a speculative shot that deceived the St Paul’s defence and ended in the back of the net to leave them 5-1 to 0-0 behind.
Kilrea however improved significantly during the second half, helped no doubt by an early goal from sub Eimear Henry, although Síne Woodhouse hit back with a fine solo point.
It was a long way back for Kilrea but Natalie Mullan was prominent in pushing them on the attack in the second half and eventually Grace Quinn scored a second goal for them. But once again St Killian’s responded and midfielder Ashling Donnelly pointed to end the scoring.
St Killian’s now have Loreto Coleraine on their radar for the next game on the first week back.
