Shamrocks take Junior Feis title

Feis na nGleann 2019 – Junior Feis Cup Hurling

Loughgiel Shamrocks 1-15 Glenariffe Oisins 2-10

Loughgiel won the Junior Feis Cup hurling when they beat hosts Glenariffe by two points in a hard fought contest. Down to fourteen men from the 27th minute when they had a man sent off Loughgiel still held the upper hand for most of the game and though the Oisins got it back to a point four minutes into injury time top scorer Niall ‘Cowboy’ McFadden sealed the win for the Shamrocks with a late, late point.

Cowboys late point sealed the Shamrocks win

In a close opening half Loughgiel went a point up in the opening minute but a goal from veteran forward Alex McDonnell put Glenariffe in front. A point from a Niall McFadden free and one from distance by Paul Boyle gave Loughgiel the edge again but the hosts came back with points from Tom Quinn and Alex McDonnell on 13 minutes. Three in a row from OD Laverty, Cowboy McFadden and Paddy Laverty gave the Shamrocks a bit of a cushion and though Glenariffe replied through Alex McDonnell and Caolan O’Connor points from Paul Boyle and Paddy Laverty gave them a 0-10 to 1-4 lead at the break.

The lead was soon out to five as McFadden and Laverty tacked on points but a goal and a point inside two minutes by the Oisins stand out player Caolan O’Connor breathed new life into the game. Loughgiel came back with a goal by Tomas McIntyre who batted the ball in at the far post after a strong run by Paul Boyle and when OD Laverty added a point Glenariffe had a mountain to climb. O’Connor dragged them back into it with some fine scores and Patrick Burns chipped in with a well taken point, but Loughgiel were able hold off the later rally and Cowboy’s late point sealed the win.
