Maghera tops in Leonard Cup qualifiers

Leonard Cup – Colleges Hurling

St Pat’s Maghera qualified in top spot in Tuesday’s Leonard Cup qualifying game at the Dub. Seven teams took part in the round robin series of games, with everyone playing each other in games of two seven and a half minute halves.

The Maghera boys were the only team to finish the day undefeated, having recorded four wins and two draws, sharing the spoils with St Mary’s in the their second game and Our Lady & St Patrick’s Knock in the final game, a very good result for the Knock school, who just missed out on qualification for the semi-finals.

CPC finished in second spot, beating everyone except Maghera, the Derry boys getting the better of the Convent by a point in a real good game.

St Mary’s finished in third spot with three wins and a draw, but lost out to CPC and Knock, and will now meet CPC in next week’s semi-final, while St Killian’s made up the top four. The Tower boys got off to a flyer and won their first three games, but they then went on to lose to St Pat’s, St Mary’s and CPC. They finished level on points with luckless OLSPK by virtue of beating them in their round robin games.

St Louis Ballymena ended with a win over Red High and a draw with

Knock while it was a tough day for the Downpatrick boys who ended without a win, though they performed really well against the tip two teams, losing out by just a point to Magera and by four to CPC.

Next week’s semi-finals will see Maghera take on St Killian’s, while CPC face St Mary’s
