Leinster Minor Hurling Championship – Group 3
Derry 0-6 Antrim 4-18
Antrim made it three from three in the group stages of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship, to top their group, with a convincing win over Derry in Owenbeg on a scoreline of 4-18 to 0-6.
Playing into the breeze in the first half, Antrim couldn’t have got off to a better start as early goals from Lorcan Philips and Jack McCloskey put them in control. The young Saffs continued to drive forward at every opportunity taking some great points from Joseph McLaughlin, Cormac McKeown, Kevin O’Boyle and Darragh Patterson, with McCloskey getting his second goal to finish the first half on a scoreline of 3-10 to 0-3.
Derry looked to start the second half with much more aggression but struggled to breakdown a resolute Antrim defence lead by the outstanding Malachi McGibbon, and when Lorcan Philips goaled again early it was all but over. Antrim had control of the middle third at this stage with Patrick McIlwaine linking play excellently and the forwards continued to spread the scores around with Brogan O’Connor, Orrin O’Connor and Darragh Kelly all coming off the bench to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
This was another good away performance from the young Saffrons who play Meath in two weeks’ time where they can hopefully keep the momentum going.
