Antrim Intermediate Camogie Final
Loughgiel 1-16 Cargin 0-9
Loughgiel won the Intermediate Camogie title when they beat Cargin Saturday’s final at Dunsilly. Leading by double scores at half time (1-7 to 0-5) the Shamrock’s ability to pics off scores game them a decided edge. Cargin had a period of dominance during the third quarter but it was not reflected on the scoreboard and Loughgiel regained the imitative to pull away down the home stretch to run out ten point winners.
Left half forward Carlina Sullivan, who had a great game for the Shamrocks, opened their account with a point in the opening minute, but it was a further ten minutes before Kirsty McKendry got the next score, an excellent score struck on the run off her left side. Marie O’Neill had a goal chance for Cargin when she got in behind the Loughgiel defence but her shot was well saved by Shauna McKillop in the Loughgiel goal.
Cargin had a couple of chances but with no joy and they were made to pay when Carlina Sullivan grabbed Loughgiel’s goal on eighteen minutes when he finished off a good move by her team by driving home from close range. Katie McAnenly opened the Cargin account on seventeen minutes but Sullivan hit back immediately with her third score of the game to restore Loughgiel’s five point advantage. Gracie McLaughlin got one back for Cargin to leave just four between the sides but Loughgiel got the next two scores, one from an Anna McKillop free and the other from play by Kirsty McKendry to stretch the gap to six. Cargin were in need of a lift and they got it when they grabbed the next three points, the first from McAnenly and the other two from Graine McAtamney to cut the deficit back to two, but the Shamrocks steadied things with late points from Cara McIntyre and Eimear McKinley to lead by 1-7 to 0-5 at the break.
Anna McKillop got the first point of the second half from a 45 and though Eleanor Mallon came back with one from a Cargin free, McKillop struck again to put six between the sides. Mallon hit her second point of the new half to keep them in touch, but when the Shamrocks replied with three in a row through Cara McIntyre, Megan McGarry and Emma McMullan with just seven minutes left to play and it was clear Cargin would need something special to bridge the gap at this stage. To their credit they battle hard and Mallon and Maria O’Neill managed to pull back a couple of points, but two late points from Anna McKillop and one from substitute Rebecca Higgins saw Loughgiel safely home.
