Development Cup final
Moneyglass 2-8 Sarsfield’s 1-4
While Moneyglass ladies footballers were setting the headlines, the achievements of the clubs camogs should not be underestimated and they made their own bit of history by winning this year’s Development Cup.
It was perhaps inevitable that the teams that finished first and second in the group stages would meet in the final and so it was that St. Ergnat’s would meet Patrick Sarsfields in this year’s decider.
Alicia Boyd and Katie Scullion pointed Moneyglass into an early lead before Sinead McCoy fired home the game’s opening goal to put her side 1-2 to 0-0 ahead after 12 minutes.
Aimee Ferris got Sarsfield’s off the mark from a pointed free in the 13th minute and when the same player fired to the St. Ergnat’s net with 21 minutes gone there was only a score between the sides.
Back came the Marian Hill girls with Ciara Scullion pointing a couple of frees in quick succession to move her side three in front by the 25th minute and when Sinead McCoy fired home her second goal of the contest they were back in control.
The final score of the half fell to Sarsfield’s Laura McKernan who pointed with three minutes remaining to the break to leave her side trailing by 2-4 to 1-2 at the break.
The goals dried up in the second half but it was Moneyglass who extended their lead through points from the excellent Sinead McCoy in the 32nd and 42nd minutes.
Sarsfield’s were struggling to break down a resolute St. Ergnat’s defence but Laura McKernan finally opened their second half account with a point in the 43d minute but they failed to build on McKernan’s score.
Two more from Ciara Scullion and the superb McCoy concluded the Moneyglass scoring with 11 minutes still to play but Sarsfield’s only response came from a pointed Aimee Ferris free in the 57th minute.
A great season for the girls from Moneyglass and it is important that the achievements of their camogs is not lost amidst the success of their footballers.
Sinead McCoy has been excellent all year for the Moneyglass side and she was again very much to the fore in this final while Ciara Scullion, Nuala McErlain, Aine Scullion and Niamh McKeefry were others to impress in a solid St. Ergnat’s performance.
It just didn’t happen on the day for a Sarsfields side who have had a good season with Aimme Ferris, Laura McKernan and Duana Coleman their best performers on the day.
