Sciath Aoife final at Cargin, Toomebridge
Coláiste Feirste 3-10 St Colm’s Draperstown 1-2
COLÁISTE Feirste won their first ever Ulster schools’ camogie title in Cargin on Monday evening when they powered away from St Colm’s Draperstown in the second half.
At the end of a very competitive first half just a point separated the teams with Coláiste Feirste ahead. But St Colm’s were guilty of some poor wides during that period. In fact they accumulated ten wides in total and were made to pay for it after Chloe Nic Oirc’s goal 90 seconds into the second proved the platform for Coláiste Feirste to power through to a comfortable win.
The Ard na bhFeá Gaeilgeoirí had some excellent players including their top two scorers Ayesha El Ouahata and Chloe Nic Oirc, midfielder Róisín Ní Bhrádaigh who dropped back to protect her defence and Niamh Ní hÉanna a towering presence at the back.
Coláiste Feirste got off to a great start with a point from El Ouahata and then a goal from Nic Oirc after six minutes. However St Colm’s recovered with the help of a free from Lily Anne Reid and they settled into the game.
But a lot of shots from out the field tailed wide and they should have been in the lead by half-time if just a fraction of those shots had registered a score. Lily Anne Reid scored a goal directly from a long-range free in the 20th minute to make it 1-3 to 1-2 and that was how they turned around at the break.
However they were made to pay for their ten wides when Nic Oirc doubled Coláiste Feirste’s lead early in the new half with her second goal after El Ouahata had pointed in the opening attack.
El Ouahata, who fields for Gort na Móna, was the star of the game with four quite brilliant points from outside the 45m line during the third quarter. Those scores gradually pulled Coláiste Feirste clear and they already had one hand on the trophy when their other midfielder Róisín Ní Bhrádaigh burst forward for the third goal in the 50th minute.
St Colm’s fought hard, but found the Belfast defence difficult to penetrate and El Ouahata and Nic Oric tagged on points close to the end to complete a comprehensive victory.
