Antrim Hurling League Division 2
Carey Faughs 5-18 St Paul’s 0-12
Carey Faughs are one game away from winning the Division 2 hurling title after beating St Paul’s in Sunday’s penultimate game in Ballyvoy. With Glenarm beating St Gall’s in their game in Feystown the two north Antrim sides go into to Wednesday evening’s final game level on 20 points each, but Carey superior head to head score difference over Glenarm (they beat Glenarm by eight points on Wednesday evening while Glenarm be them by four three days earlier) gives them the edge. On Wednesday evening the Faughs travel over the mountain to Cushendun for the second leg of the Vanishing Lake derby, while Shane’s O’Neill’s make the journey to Shaw’s Road to take on St Paul’s.
Although St Paul’s started Sunday’s game against Carey strongly, and went 0-3 to 0-1 ahead, Carey soon settle into their stride and when Conleth McKinley got their first goal in the sixth minute, they were never headed again. Conal McGlynn got goal number two four minutes later and added a third on 15 minutes to open up a sizeable gap.
St Paul’s kept the scoreboard ticking over with a series of good scores as Caolan Crossan and Lorcan Philips got two apiece, while Patrick Doyle, Thomas Duff, Conal Duffy and Daira Stevenson grabbed one each to stay in contention. However when McKinley got his team’s fourth goal just five minutes from half time the Faughs were totally in control and they stretched the lead to 4-8 to 0-9 by the time Mark O’Neill sounded the half time whistle.
After the change of ends Carey to dominate and hit 1-10 during the second half while conceding just three points. The home side picked off a series of good point while McKinley finished it all with his side fifth goal five minutes from time.
The result puts St Paul’s out of the running and leaves Carey in pole position, knowing that the win will seal the league title. League success on the other hand, is now out of Glenarm’s control, but If they were to beat St Paul’s on Wednesday evening, and Cushendun were to do them a favour by either beating or drawing with Carey, then the title will be heading to Feystown.
