Four Belfast schools, Dominican, Fortwilliam, Rathmore, Coláiste Feirste and Aquinas, participated in Day 2 of the FMC Appliances Ulster schools’ Sevens competitions in Portglenone on Wednesday with Dominican capturing the Development Shield at the expense of Rathmore while last year’s winners of the Development Shield, Coláiste Feirste, went on contest the FMC Appliances Medallion Shield final.
It didn’t look too promising for Coláiste Feirste when they went down by 7-2 to 1-2 in their opening game to St Patrick’s Dungiven. However the Belfast gaelscoil really bounced back with wins over Lecale Trinity and St Mark’s Warrenpoint to take them through to the semi-finals.
There they met a fancied Loreto Coleraine side. Scores from Olivia McBride seemed to have Loreto in control, but four second half goals from Róisín Ní Bhrádaigh (two), Clódagh Nig Uirc and Caoimhe Ní Chuinneagáin took Coláiste Feirste over the line into a final re-match with the Dungiven side that had convincingly beaten them in the first outing of the morning.
Amy Deighan hit an early goal and a point in the final for St Patrick’s. But Roisín Ní Bhrádaigh’s goal left it finely poised at 2-1 to 1-1 at half-time. Although Ní Bhrádaigh closed the gap further with a goal in the second half, Clodagh Ferris sealed a 3-3 to 2-2 win near the end.
Meanwhile in the Development Shield final two goals from Aoife Conwell and a point each from Hannah McMillan and Sofia Privledge captured a first ever provincial camogie title for Dominican Fortwilliam who edged out Rathmore Grammar 2-2 to 0-1 in an exciting second half.
Dominican: Sofia Reilly, Aoife Downey, Ava Reilly, Rosa O’Connor, Hannah McMillan, Aoife Conwell, Ava Sullivan, Ellie Rose Hughes, Mena McGarriagle, Kila Sheehy, Ruby McQuillan, Sofia Privledge
