Leinster Under 20 Hurling Championship
Meath 2-21 Antrim 1-17
Meath’s U20 hurlers secured a hard-fought victory over Ulster champions Antrim on Saturday at Kilmessan, finishing with a 2-21 to 1-17 scoreline. Despite Antrim’s impressive form in their recent provincial final win over Down at the Dub, they struggled to maintain that same intensity against a clinical Meath side. The opening exchanges were defined by the accuracy of Meath’s Louis McIvor from placed balls, while Oisin McCallin kept the Saffrons in touch with his own reliable free-taking. Meath looked to pull away early with points from Mark Leavy and Kyle Ennis, but Antrim found a spark in the 17th minute when Fintan Bradley raced in from the left corner to fire a brilliant goal into the net following a pass from Callagh Mooney.
The goal briefly shifted the momentum in favour of the visitors, as points from Liam McEnhill, Thomas McLaughlin, and Orrin O’Connor brought the sides level at 1-08 to 0-11 by the 19th minute. However, Meath finished the half the stronger of the two teams. A spectacular individual point from the sideline by McIvor served as a highlight of the opening period, helping the Royals carry a two point lead into the dressing rooms at the break with the score standing at 0-13 to 1-08.
The second half began as a seesaw battle, with Finn Conroy and Kyle Ennis tagging on scores for Meath while Callagh Mooney and Orrin O’Connor responded for Antrim. The game reached a critical turning point in the 40th minute when a loose ball broke in the Antrim square. Amidst a defensive mix-up, Kyle Ennis was quickest to react, pulling on the ground to find the net and pushing Meath four points clear. Antrim fought back valiantly, with Oisin McCamphill and Charlie McAuley hitting long-range scores to cut the deficit to just two points heading into the final ten minutes.
Antrim had a golden opportunity to level the game in the 53rd minute when Liam McEnhill broke through and found Thomas McLaughlin, but Meath the goalkeeper Cummins produced a vital save to keep his side ahead. As the clock ticked toward injury time, Antrim’s efforts were undone by a series of defensive errors during short puck-out routines. After McIvor extended the lead to three, disaster struck Antrim when Meath took advantage defensive mix-up to fire to the open net. This late goal put the result beyond doubt, sealing a seven-point victory for the Royals and leaving the Ulster champions to rue their missed opportunities.
