O’Neill’s All County Hurling League Division 4
Con Magees 3-17 St Teresa’s 2-10
‘Youth Springs Eternal’ as sure as night follows day and hangovers follow a big night out. Once again team managers Sean Kerr and Archie Rae went with a youthful team at Fr Maginn Park and once again the young guns did the business. Odhran McAleenan led the way with a good opening point after beating two men and the not quite so young Niall Donnelly followed up with a point from a free. St Teresa’s hit back with 1:02 without reply before Declan Traynor got Glenravel going again as he pointed from play. St Teresa’s now had their tails up and were trying to boss things around the middle of the park, but Shane Woulahan was coming out with the ball on most occasions, and on one of these found Padge O’Neill who started a move which ended with Decky Traynor firing to the roof of the Saints net.
There was no stopping the Glenravel team after this and a succession of good points, plus a Niall Donnelly goal helped the home team to a 2:09 to 1:05 lead at half time.
Brian O’Neill and Decky Abram each added points at the start of the second half before St Teresa’s were awarded a penalty which they converted. However, Decky Traynor who had caused problems in the St Teresa’s defence throughout the game ,counteracted with a great point. Conleth O’Loan who had come on at the start of the second half for Niall Donnelly won a free in the top right corner that Padge O’Neill slotted over. Despite dominating much of the game, by the midpoint of the second half Glenravel were only seven ahead, however the game was put to bed when James Duffin won the ball and started a move which ended Conleth O’Loan scrambling the ball over the St Teresa’s goal line. Both teams exchanged a few points from frees during the next five minute spell before James Duffin pointed from forty yards after good work from Johnny Fyfe. Brian O’Neill followed this up with another well taken point and with seven minutes remaining he score line 3:17 to 2:10.
From number one to fifteen all of the Glenravel players looked comfortable with the job they were tasked with. This resulted in another good win from a youthful home team and with many regulars injured/ rested the competition for places will intensify in the weeks and months to come.
