All County Hurling League Division 2
Oisins 5-17 Cloughmills 0-8
Glenariffe ran up a big score against visitors Cloughmills on Sunday in Waterfoot to keep their bid for promotion well on track with another confident display. When you consider at this stage last year the Oisins were still looking for their first win, it is amazing how they are a transformed side this season, hitting big scores in every outing and now lie third in the table, a point behind Creggan and two behind leaders Sarsfields
Corner forward Alex O’Boyle was the man who did the most damage yesterday, scoring an incredible 4-4, 4-2 of that from play. The corner forward was unstoppable, especially in the opening half where he bagged a hat-trick of goals.
Cloughmills on the other hand sit at the bottom of the table, still looking for their first win. It is hard to believe that just two seasons ago the Biddies were Ulster Intermediate champions, but with so many good hurlers in their ranks they will surely turn things around soon.
The visitors opened the scoring on Sunday with a point from Ruairi Laverty in the opening minute but Alex O’Boyle put the Oisins ahead three minutes later when he bagged the first of his four goals. Mickey Devlin pulled a point back for Cloughmills from a free but points from a Michael Haughey 65 and an Alex O’Boyle free put the home side three clear by the tenth minute. Devlin grabbed a second point on 12 minutes to keep his team well in touch but Glenariffe were getting on top and in a five minute spell of dominance they hit four unanswered points through Caolan O’Connor, Kieran McKendry, Randal McDonnell and Seamus McDonnell to move six ahead. Liam Kearns came back with a point for the Biddies in the 23rd minute but the Oisins finished the opening half with a flourish and two goals from O’Boyle, plus points from play from Seamus McDonnell, Mickey Gettins and Paul McDonnell had them fifteen clear….though Liam Kearns cut that back to fourteen with the final poc of the first half.
Any hopes Cloughmills may have had of a second half revival were soon dashed as Alex O’Boyle grabbed his fourth goal, after Randall McDonnell had landed a long range point from play. Liam Kearns and Mickey Devlin pulled a couple of points back for Cloughmills but it was mostly one way traffic as no less than ten Glenariffe players got on the scoreboard throughout the hour.
The Oisin’s next outing is in two weeks time when they travel to Randalstown to take on Tir na nOg while Cloughmills face another tough taks when they play second placed Kickhams in Creggan.
