Carey beat the Biddies again

Countess of Antrim Cup – North Antrim Hurling

Carey Faughs 1–12 St Brigid’s Cloughmills 0-8

When these two sides met in ACHL Div 2 two weekends ago, Carey came away comfortable winners by twelve points in a high scoring entertaining game.

On what felt like a winters day today, blustery conditions were never going to allow a repeat of the free flowing hurling displayed last time out, but the result still went Carey’s way in a game which the Ballyvoy men controlled from start to finish.

When referee Malachy Leech got proceedings underway, it was Cloughmills who registered the first score of the game with a Mickey Devlin score from play, quickly answered by a Darren McGowan point for Carey. Devlin then slotted over a free for Cloughmills after five minutes to give his side a one point advantage, but this was to be the last time they would lead during the hours play.

Over the next fifteen minutes Carey took control and registered five points, four of which came from play, from James McCouaig, Sean McLoughlin, two from the hurl of Conor McBride, plus a James Black free. During this time Cloughmills only reply came from a Mickey Devlin free which after 25 minutes left the score 0-6 to 0-3 in Carey’s Favour, but in truth it should have been more only for some wasteful shooting by Carey during this spell when they were well on top.

It looked like this may prove to be costly, as after 26 minutes Ruairi Laverty popped a point over the bar for Cloughmills and then on the blow for halftime, Liam Kearns made no mistake from a placed ball to cut the arrears to the minimum at the halftime interval. (0-6 to 0-5)

Carey however made a great start to the second half, James Black split the posts with a free in the first minute, before Caolan McCaughan made one of his usual runs forward from midfield to score a nice point. The game was all but put to bed in the thirty sixth minute when Fiachra McVeigh was found on the twenty metre line, where he advanced towards goal before lifting the roof of the Cloughmills net with a rifled shot which gave the keeper no chance.

The game petered out a bit in the final twenty minutes with both sides making a number of substitutions which broke up the play. Carey kept Cloughmills at arms-length, with points from Martin Hunter, Patrick Butler, Conor McBride and Cathair Brogan. Cloughmills scoring two from play from Liam Kearns and one free from Mickey Devlin to leave Carey seven point victors at the full time whistle.

A solid performance from Carey, who had Sean McBride, Peader McVeigh, and James McCouaig showing well in a good defensive unit which limited Cloughmills to only three points from play. Caolan McCaughan, James Black and Sean McLoughlin performed best up front for Carey. For Cloughmills, Conor Laverty, Mickey Devlin and Aaron Smylie were the players who stood out.

McGarry steers All Saints to Feile C title

North Antrim Feile na nGael B Final

All Saints 2-7 Naomh Eanna 0-2

A brilliant display by man of the match Aodhan McGarry steered All Saints to victory over Naomh Eanna in Sunday’s Feile B final in Cushendall. Playing at midfield McGarry controlled matters for the Ballymena boys, ending with a personal total of 1-6 after a commanding performance.

McGarry opened the scoring with a pointed free in the first minute but Naomh Eanna drew level three minutes later with a point from a Cian O’Connor free. McGarry edged All Saints back in front and his midfield partner Pearse Martin added another before centre forward Fintan Brady broke through to fire an unstoppable shot to the Naomh Eanna net and two more McGarry points had them 1-5 to 0-1 ahead at half time.

A goal from a penalty just two minutes into the second half by McGarry all but ended the Naomh Eanna hopes and though the Glengormley boys kept battling to the end they found it hard to make inroads against a sound All Saints defence for whom Kevin O’Boyle was superb at centre back. The excellent Cian O’Connor did manage to pull a point back for Naomh Eanna but McGarry had the final say with another pointed free to book his team a place in next Saturday’s county final against Rossa.

Eire Og grab first win after thrilling finish

All County Football League Division 3

Eire Og 0-8 O’Donnells 0-7

Friday 26 April

Eirie Og got their first win of the season with a hard fought but deserved victory against O’Donnells. In what turned out to be a low scoring game it was O’Donnells who raced into an early lead scoring three points without reply in the opening ten minutes, but that was to be their last score of the half. Conor McKenna and Conor Erskine soon got control of midfield and the Ogs started to dominate possession with Stephen Erskine, Adam McKenna and Conor McKenna hitting points to bring them level at the break, and it could have been even better for the home side as a couple of clear goal chances went begging.

The second half started well for the Ogs as they continued to control the game with Brendan Shannon showing well at full forward. They opened up a two point lead which really should have been five when Brendan Shannon’s fisted ball, which seemed goal-bound, came off the crossbar. With ten minutes to go O’Donnell’s had pegged back the deficit to leave the game all square and set up a thrilling finish. A superbly struck 45 by Brendan Shannon saw the Ogs take the lead again only for ODonnell’s to respond with two fine points to regain the lead, and it looked like the men from the Whiterock side had snatched victory.

With just five minutes left to play, and the Ogs trailing by a point, things were looking ominous, but the Ogs dug deep and pressed forward playing some great football. This was rewarded when a superb point by Conor McKenna drew them level and in the last minute another excellent 45 by Brendan Shannon gave them victory, the 45 awarded after O’Donnell’s goalkeeper, Conor Walsh, made a fantastic save to deny Shannon what seemed a certain goal.

All an all a great performance by the men in black and red but particular credit to Conor Erskine who gave an outstanding display.
