Antrim see off Down challenge but there is work to be done before clash with Laois

Leinster Under 20 Hurling Championship Play-Off

Down 1-13 Antrim 3-17

Paul McIntyre reports from Ballycran.

Crucial goals, scored at crucial times, helped Antrim see off a spirited Down side at Ballycran on Tuesday evening and advance to set up a round two clash against Laois next Tuesday evening in Navan.

Goals either side of the half time whistle from Rian ‘Bubbles’ McMullan and Michael McGarry helped put the Saffron’s in a commanding position but Ronan Sheehan’s side battled gamely and only for a missed penalty in the 45th minute, the final quarter could’ve had a very different look to it.

Tom McGratten who top scored for Down

Speaking after the full time whistle, coach Johnny McIntosh was keen to praise all twenty players that took to the field.  “We’re happy, and as we said to the players, we’re very happy with the impact and the attitude of the subs coming on. They made a big difference. We never probably played as well as we would’ve liked. We probably got a lucky break just before the half to get a goal and that put us ten up and that maybe gave us a wee bit more comfort at half time that we probably deserved to be honest. In fairness to the lads, they kept tearing away, they made the chances for themselves.”

While happy with the result, McIntosh knows that next week will require a a step up in performance if they are to advance any further in the competition. “We’ve a load to work on, absolutely tonnes to work on. We know we have a massive challenge on our hands next Tuesday night. We know what we have and we know what we have to do and we know we’ve a big challenge ahead for us, but we have tonnes to improve on and that’s the main thing. We certainly know what went on here today and it will not do next week so we’re looking forward to it and we’ll see how we’ll go.”

It was a cagey opening period with Down’s Tom McGrattan twice putting the hosts ahead with Daire Murphy twice levelling matters for Antrim. These opening four scores all came from placed balls and the fifth one was also a free as Declan McCloskey pushed Antrim ahead for the first time after 9 minutes.

The first score from play arrived in the 10th minute from Loughgiel’s McMullan before McGrattan’s third free cut the arrears to just one point.

Seanie McIntosh registered his firts score of the game on 13 minutes and this proved to be the catalyst for a period of total dominance for the young Saffrons as they outscored their hosts 1-7 to 0-1 before the half time whistle.

Niall O’Connor, Ciaran McQuillan and Cormac Donnelly were the dominant players in the middle sector, and with Conal Bohill’s strong direct running causing Down all sorts of problems, Antrim made the most of playing with a strong first half breeze.

McIntosh and Michael McGarry helped establish a four point lead before Murphy converted a further three frees before Bohill saw his attempt at goal bounce off the inside of Cathal Lavery’s right-hand post.

After McGrattan conjured up a point from nothing for Down, McMullan struck for Antrim’s first goal on the stroke of half time. Murphy’s shot was pushed away by Lavery and the Shamrocks attacker was quickest to the loose ball and pounce to give his side a ten point half time lead, 1-11 to 0-4.

After Sean Hughes had opened the second half scoring for Down, Antrim struck for the games second goal on 33 minutes. Another trademark run through the Down defence, Bohill picked out Michael McGarry who rifled past Laverty to open up a 12 point lead.

McMullan from a free and a further McIntosh point kept Antrim well on top before two Sean Hughes points brought Down to within 10 points when they were given a lifeline to get back into the contest.

Rory McCloskey was adjudged to have been holding Down replacement Francis Caldwell and referee Leon Reynolds awarded a penalty, but Stuart Martin’s effort failed to trouble Paul Doherty, and the Dunloy netminder was able to clear the ball to safety.

Down to their credit kept plugging away and two minutes later McGrattan found a way past Doherty to give the Mournemen a much needed boost, but they still trailed 2-14 to 1-9.

Four minutes later and any sign of a late comeback from the hosts were put to bed. McQuillan’s effort at a point seemed to be drifting harmlessly wide, but while everyone else turned away to await the puck out second half substitute Dannan McKeough kept the ball in play and rounded his marker to fire past Lavery for Antrim’s third goal.

As Down tagged on a few late points Antrim advanced largely unscathed as McMullan brought proceedings to and end as he clipped over his sixth score with the final puck of the game.

Football League Fixtures and Previews

 (Wed 30th June)

As the end of the football league draws closer we have another full round of fixtures for Wednesday evening and those involved will get to do the same again a couple of days later as they complete the penultimate round of competition on Friday evening.

Division One (all games at 7.45pm)

St Gall’s v Casement’s Portglenone

Casement’s recorded a big win over visitors Aghagallon on Sunday and they will travel to Belfast to play St Gall’s with morale boosted.

The Milltown men have proved a little indifferent in their performances to date but they are more than capable of a solid performance and may well ask questions to the Portglenone men.

St John’s v Erin’s Own Cargin

Cargin remained on the winning trail on their last outing when a late point gained a hard fought victory over the visiting St Brigid’s.

The Toome men remain in pole position and they will hope to remain there when they visit Corrigan Park.

The Johnnies are never easily beaten in Corrigan but Cargin may well gain a narrow victory.

St Brigid’s v Lamh Dhearg

St Brigid’s have been going well this year and they came close to beating Cargin in Toome last time out.

That was a solid performance from the South Belfast men and they will be hoping for a similar performance as they play hosts to Lamh Dhearg in this all city encounter.

The Hannahstown men impressed last time out when they proved far too strong for the visiting Gort na Mona but they will face a tougher test at Musgrave Park.

Gort Na Mona v St Mary’s Ahoghill

Gort na Mona have proved more than a bit inconsistent to date and they certainly were not at their best last time when they lost to Lamh Dhearg.

They suffered a heavy defeat to the Hannastown side and Niall Ward’s charges will return to Enright Park looking for an improved performance as they welcome Ahoghill.

The Cloney side lost their opening six games but really got it right last time with a big win over Aghagallon and are capable of gaining another brace of points if they can reproduce that form.

St Mary’s Aghagallon v O’ Donovan Rossa

Aghagallon endured another defeat last time when they lost out to Casement’s.

The St Mary’s men have gained a couple of wins to date and they will be hoing for another from the visit of Rossa.

The Shaw’s road side led the division for a time but they have lost ground of late but they will travel to Aghagallon seeking a win in order to remain in touch at the top.

St Enda’s v Kickham’s Creggan

St Enda’s recorded a good win on their visit to Casements last time out and they will be hoping to add to that win when Creggan visit Hightown. The Kickham’s were pushed all the way by the visiting St. John’s last week and they will face a tough task in this repeat of last year’s championship meeting which could go either way.

Division Two (all games at 7.45 pm)

Cuchullian’s Dunloy v Patrick Sarsfield’s

Dunloy continue to find the going tough without the services of their county contingent and points remain elusive in their campaign to date.

They await their first win but they may well see this as an opportunity to open their account from the visit of Sarsfields.

The Stewartstown road side are in a similar position without a point to date so something has to give here and home advantage could give the Cuchullian’s a tentative nod.

St Teresa’s v Con Magees Glenravel

St Teresa’s have four wins from eight starts but can prove difficult to beat on their own ground as they welcome the Glensmen to the Glen Road.

Liam Mc Goldrick’s charges lost out to Tir na nOg in Randalstown last time and they will be hoping for better from the visit of Con Magees.

Glenravel have been going really well this year and recorded an eleven point win over Moneyglass last time and they look capable of another win here.

St Ergnat’s Moneyglass v Michael Davitt’s

Having endured more than their fair share of injuries during this term the reigning Intermediate champions have struggled recently.

They lost at home to  Tir na nOg and again last time when they travelled to Glenravel and they will hoping for improvement as Davitt’s visit.

Davitt’s certainly have picked up the pace as the season has progressed  but they lost last time time when Aldergrove visited and they may struggle again in this journey to Marian Hill.

St James Aldergrove v All Saint’s

This looks a cracker as Aldergrove play hosts to the men from Ballymena with promotion to the top division certainly an issue at Crumlin.

The home side are only a point in arrears of their visitors and they will be aware than a full return of points could ensure a second place berth

All Saints started the season with a defeat to the visiting Randalstown but have picked up the pace since but they will do well to take anything from this one.

St Joseph’s Glenavy v St Paul’s

Glenavy have struggled this year with just a single win to date.

The Chapel Hill residents are capable of better and they will look at this visit of St Pauls as an opportunity.

St Paul’s are a place ahead of the St Joseph’s men in the ratings but they may well struggle to gain the verdict over the home side this time.

Ardoyne Kickham’s v Tir na nOg Randalstown

The reigning Junior champions, Ardoyne Kickham’s have fared well in their return to the second grade this term.

The North Belfast men sit in mid table at present but this looks a tough assignment as league leaders Tir na nOg visit.

The Randalstown side sit in pole position with a full return of points and although the home side may well give them a run for their money a win for the Whitehill Blues is anticipated.

Division Three (all games at 7.45pm)

Pearses v Eire Og

Patrick Pearses remain in contention for a top four finish and they may well gain another couple of points in this onefrom the visit of Eire Og.

Laochra Loch Lao v St Comgall’s

St Comgall’s continue to lead the way in the division and Adrian Dougan’s charges should consolidate their place at the top with another couple of points on this visit to Belfast

Mc Quillan’s Ballycastle v Cardinal O’ Donnell’s

Cardinal O’ Donnell’s have slipped down the ratings following a great start to the league campaign but they may well gain another couple of points from their visit to Ballycastle.

St Patrick’s Lisburn v St Mary’s Rasharkin

This looks likely to be a close one as St Patricks Lisburn play hosts to Rasharkin. Rasharkin started this year’s campaign well before suffering a couple of bad results but got back to winning ways recently and this one could go either way.

St Malachy’s v St Agnes

St Malachy’s have only one point from their opening seven games and they may well struggle to change that trend from the visit of St. Agnes who are given the nod here.

Clouhmills edge it at Shaw’s Road

Antrim Hurling League Division 2

St Paul’s 1-15 St Brigid’s Cloughmills 1-18

Despite the fact that neither side can qualify for the play off stages of the league St Paul’s and Cloughmills served up a fine game of hurling at Shaw’s Road on Sunday, with the visitors just getting the edge to win by three.

With full forward Caolan Duffin, Anton Gallagher and Declan Chapman hitting scores St Paul’s lead by 0-6 to 0-5 at the first half water break, Liam Kearns and Mickey Devlin grabbing two points apiece for Cloughmills. In the second quarter St Paul’s continued to hold the upper hand and a goal just before half time by corner forward Declan Chapman saw the end the first half with a 1-9 to 0-8 advantage.

Cloughmills started to eat into the St Paul’s lead during the third quarter and a goal from full forward Liam Kearns just before the second had water break had them ahead by 1-13 to 1-12. The final quarter remained competitive but the Biddies just had the edge as Kearns and Devlin picked off the points to end up winners by three points.

Emmets come good in second half

All County Hurling League Division 2

Cushendun 2-18 Sarsfields 1-11

A dominant second half display saw Cushendun turn a four point half time deficit into a ten point win when Sarfields visited CushLig an Airgid on Sunday in Division 2 of the Antrim Hurling League Division 2

With the breeze behind them in the first half the Paddies played some great hurling and were good value for their half time lead, but after the change of ends the home side were able to up the pace and they soon overhauled their visitors to go on and win comfortably.

After ‘Loaf’ McNeill had given Cushendun an early lead with a pointed free Kevin McKernan came back with two for Sarsfields, while Donal McKernan added one from play to put their team 0-3 to 0-1 ahead. Two more pointed frees from Loaf brought the Emmet’s level, and though Donal McKernan edged Sarsfields back in front in the 14th minute two points from Conleith Ryan and one from Harry Kilgore put Cushendun two clear by the 18th minute.

The final ten minutes of the first half was all Sarsfields as they added points from Kevin McKernan (2), Brendan Gibbons, Michael Jackson plus a goal from Pearse Cusack to go in at the break leading by 1-9 to 0-8.

The introduction of David Kilgore and Corad McDonnell just before the break was to prove a big help to Cushendun and both were involved in a heavy scoring burst just after the restart, Kilgore getting 1-1 and McDonnell a point, the goal coming in the 40th minute to give the home team back the lead that they would not relinquish.

Kevin McKernan pulled one back for Sarsfields but the Emmet’s were now firmly in control and they hit six more on the trot to move clear of danger, two of them from Conleth Ryan, and one each from Harry Kilgore, Conrad McDonnell, Matthew McCartin and Conlaoith McNeill.

Ryan Carson and Kevin McKernan replied for Sarsfields but a Conleth Ryan goal in the 60th minute put the seal on the win for Cushendun
