Wins for Loughgiel and Dunloy as Senior Camogie Championship gets underway

Antrim Senior Camogie Championship

Round 1

Loughgiel 7-25 Tír na nÓg 0-2

Dunloy 0-11 Ballycastle 0-7

DUNLOY struck the first blow in the round robin series of the Antrim championship when they came from three points down to grind out a four points’ win against Ballycastle in Dunloy on Saturday evening.

There were no goals in the game with both goalkeepers sound and defences on top while the county’s All-Ireland winners did well in their first outing for their clubs this year.

Caoimhe Conlon and Chloe Drain were strong in Dunloy’s defence with Aileen McManus and Caoimhe Molloy also coming through with big games. For Ballycastle, Catherine McShane was excellent in defence while the Kelly sisters and Emma Laverty also played well.

Caoimhe Wright pointed three frees and Maeve Kelly added another point from wide on the wing inside the opening 20 minutes as Ballycastle took an early lead, but by half time it was 0-6 each with Nicole O’Neill pointing four frees.

Cassie McArthur pointed early in the second half and O’Neill added another free as Dunloy edged clear. Ballycastle only scored once in the second half, from a Niamh Donnelly free and the home side added three points during the last quarter, two from O’Neill and the third from Katie Molly.

As expected Loughgiel were very comfortable winners over last year’s Intermediate championship winners Tír na nÓg on Friday evening.

The next round of games is next Saturday with Ballycastle at home to Loughgiel and Cushendall entering the competition with an away game in Dunloy.

Dunloy : Nicole O’Neill 0-7, Cassie McArthur 0-2, Erin Elliott 0-1, Katie Molloy 0-1.

Ballycastle : Caoimhe Wright 0-4, Maeve Kelly 0-1, Fionnuala Kelly 0-1, Niamh Donnelly 0-1 free.
