ACHL Division 2

Glenariffe Oisin 1-19 – Cloney Gaels 2-19

Goals from youngsters Paddy Dougan in the 28th minute of the first half and another from Colla McDonnell in the opening minute of the second turned this well contested ACHL Division 2 encounter in Waterfoot in favour of visitors Cloney Gaels.

Following an opening day win over Tir na nOg in Ahoghill the visitors were hoping to make it two from two while the Oisin’s were hoping to get points on board following their defeat to Cathaoir an Ri were aiming to open their account.

In a hard hitting first half it was Glenariffe who looked to be heading into the interval with their noses in front with Dan McKillop converting half a dozen frees to punish indiscretions by the visitors. Alex O’Boyle, Aaron Cosgrove and Oliver Kearney were all on target for the Waterfoot men but James and PJ O’Connell, youngster Colla McDonnell, Ronan Graham, Tomas McGlone and Bernard Graham kept the Cloney side within touching distance before Paddy Dougan finished to the Oisin’s net to give his side a slender two point lead at the interval.

Colla McDonnell was having an increasing influence on proceedings and the corner forward struck again in the opening minute of the second half to move Cloney Gaels five points clear before striking his side’s 10th point, two minutes later.

James O’Connell added another as Glenariffe fought hard to get their own game together with points from Alex O’Boyle and Ben O’Boyle from play and another McKillop free but the Ahoghill men were always able to keep their noses in front as James O’Connell, Dan O’Neill and Donal Graham split the posts.

PJ O’Connell for the visitors and Alex O’Boyle for Glenariffe traded two points apiece to keep the Cloney Gaels six in front before Ben O’Boyle fired home his side’s only goal to leave just three in it with ten minutes remaining to set up a grandstand finish.

Alex O’Boyle

Glenariffe threw everything at the opposition with Dan McKillop converting two frees and adding another from play but a determined Ahoghill were always able to find a response as Colla McDonnell, Owen Neeson and Dan O’Neill replied with points to keep the gap at three as Ciaran McCloskey sounded his full time whistle.

Ballycastle got their second win in four days in Division 1 of the Antrim hurling league when they hosted North Antrim neighbours  Cushenun at Pair MacUilin on Sunday afternoon. Loch Mór continued their unbeaten start to their ACHL Division 4 campaign with a two-point win over Ardoyne Kickhams in an entertaining clash at Fennell Park.

The home side got off to a flying start when Oisín McVicker rattled the net in the opening minutes, with Jim McAuley adding a free moments later. But the Ardoyne men would fail to score for a further 22 minutes with the visitors adding 1-4 without reply, Ferdia Carson with the major and Darragh Turley accurate from frees.

A Simon McCrory free stopped the rot for the north Belfast side but Turley raised another white flag from a placed ball to ensure a three-point lead for the visitors at the break, 1-5 to 1-2.

A Turley brace extended the Loch Mór lead after the restart but Ardoyne then enjoyed a period of dominance with Dan Moore, Paul McGuigan and Aaron Stewart adding points from play and McAuley getting a touch on a McVicker delivery for his side’s second goal of the day.

Turley forced a great save from JP Agnew between the Ardoyne posts and the same player pointed the resultant 65 to edge Loch Mór back into the lead. Moore and Turley swapped points but the decisive score came from Murtagh Moran who fired home Loch Mór’s third goal.

Ardoyne’s Pearse Hull made it a three-point game with five minutes on the clock. Conor Jones stretched the visitors’ lead to four points, and although McCrory and McVicker narrowed the gap, Ardoyne were unable to reel in Loch Mór who now sit in second place in the Division 4 table behind leaders Ballymena.

Cargin on top as St. Gall’s visit

All County U-17 Football League Division One

Erin’s Own Cargin 4-11 St Gall’s 0-03

Cargin retained their winning form to keep in close contact with the top of the group when they gained another two points at the expense of the visiting St Gall’s in Toome sod on Sunday last.

The final score line suggests as an easy passage for the Toome side but it does not acknowledge the true tale of events as the Milltown side never gave up the ghost but home side net minder, Daniel McCann made several fine saves to deny them over the hour.

Cargin enjoyed the slight advantage of the cross field breeze in the first quarter and took an early lead when impressive Conhuir Johnston raised back to back points in the opening few minutes.

St Gall’s mid field pairing of John Mc Cullough and Manus MacCroise were in a stiff battle with Charlie Mc Cann and Cian Scullion for mid field supremacy and the pace laden Dualtach Crawford and Padraig O’ Muiri were asking questions of the home sides defence but Hugh O’ Donnell and Jack O’ Neill Cargin were holding firm in the opening phase.

St Gall’s proved wayward in their finishing and Cargin keeper McCann found advancing centre back Ciaran Mc Peake and he linked with Ryan O’ Neill before applying a superb finish with a fine goal.

The home side had 1-02 on the scoreboard without reply but a fine John Mc Cullough point saw the visitors on the board but that was the Milltown Blues only score of the half as the home side gained supremacy.

Ryan O’ Neill increased the home side advantage and with Jack O’ Neill advancing from defence at every opportunity further points from Patrick o’ Neill and Diarmuid Quinn saw the Toome side move 1-07 to 0-01 ahead as half time approached.

Cargin full back Hugh O’ Donnell intervened to halt another St. Gall’s offensive and his clearance found Patrick O’ Neill who sent Conhuir Johnston clear to finish with an excellent goal.

Ryan O’ Neill added a further point a minute later and then Cillian Scullion sent Conhuir Johnston in to bag another goal to leave the home side in control and 3-07 to 0-01 ahead at the end of the first period.

St Gall’s had the favour of the breeze in the second half and opened with an early point from the hard working Dualtach Crawford, and when mid fielder Marcus Mac Croise followed suit the visitors looked to be gaining momentum.

The home side had other ideas however and indeed the visitors were to be denied access to the target for the remainder of the hour.

Cargin net minder Daniel Mc Cann made several saves to deny them in the final quarter and when Jack O’ Neill sent the excellent Conhuir Johnston away to bag another major that was that.

The end was nigh as Cahir O’ Boyle raised white quickly followed by another from Conhuir Johnston with Cargin net minder Daniel McCann pulling off another excellent save to deny Marcus Mac Croise in the last seconds to ensure his side crossed the winning line with a 4-11 to 0-03 advantage.

Cargin: Daniel Mc Cann, Patrick Matchyk, Hugh O’ Donnell, Jack O’ Neill, Ciaran Mc Peake (1-00), Cahir O’ Boyle (0-01), Charlie Mc Cann, Cian Scullion, Ryan O’ Neill) (0-02), Conhuir Johnston (3-06), Jack Harney, Patrick O’ Neill (0-01), Diarmuid Quinn (0-01), Carl Mc Cann

Biddies continue their good start to the season

Antrim Hurling League Division 3

Con Magees Glenravel 0-8 St Brigid’s Cloughmills 5-9

Cloughmills had too much power for an understrength Glenravel side when the two met on Sunday morning at 10am at Fr Maginn Park.

Setting some sort of record for the earliest game ever played at the venue both teams looked a little sluggish in the early stages, but once Mickey Devlin pointed Cloughmills ahead on six minutes there was no looking back for the visitors and they went 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after nine. The first if their five goals came on ten minutes when Eoin Dobbin fired home from close range and midfielder Ruairi Laverty added a point soon after to but the Biddies in complete control.

By half time it 2-7 to 0-3, James Doherty getting the second Cloughmills goal on 24 minutes, while James Duffin was the man on target for Glenravel, adding two points from frees.

A goal at the start of the second half by James Doherty saw the home team goalkeeper Ronan Donnelly have to retire inured, which didn’t help their cause, Rian Lennon being called in to deputise. The scoring dried up for both teams for a while with just one Mickey Devlin point coming in the ninth minute, but the Biddies soon got going again and substitute Liam Kearns grabbed his team’s fourth goal in the 47th minute.

Two pointed frees by Padge O’Neill and James Duffin got Glenravel on the scoreboard in the second half and a late flurry from Niall Donnelly saw him add three more, two from frees and one from play, but Eoin Dobbin got Cloughmills fifth goal and also added a point from play to see his team head back down Omerbane with another win under their belts, as they continue their good start to the season.
