Brídíní Óga end perfect league campaign

Antrim Camogie League – Division 3

Brídíní Óga  3-17   Rasharkin 0-07

Brídíní Óga had won Division 3 mathematically last week with victory over St Pauls but they wanted to go out in style and very much did that with an emphatic victory over Rasharkin to end 2023 with nine wins over nine matches.

Rasharkin did have some very fine players on display but their opponent had strength in depth and that in the end was the difference between the teams. Defensively, Rasharkin will actually look back with pride on this game despite the scoreline. Their keeper Noeleen O’Kane in particular had a superb game with several goal line clearances and she was ably assisted by Bronagh McFerran, Eimhéar Hardy and Christina Smith in a full back line that was kept busy over the hour and did thwart the Brídíní Óga attack many times. Up front they had Jade Henry who scored all seven of their points and was a real threat when she go on the ball. But Brídíní Óga just had more fire power and got their scores from Caoimhe Duffin (0-04) all from distance, Oonagh Ward (2-01), Clodagh McPeake (1-04), Orlaith Gould (0-03), Emily Sharpe (0-02), Aisling Millar (0-01) and Megan Law (0-01) and with that range of sharp shooting Rasharkin would struggle to keep the tide out.

Player of the match Orlaith Gould

It would have been difficult to pick a player of the match with Caoimhe Duffin, Orlaith Gould and Clodagh McPeake all in the running but in the end the little dynamo that is Orlaith Gould got the nod. Orlaith tormented the opponents defence with perching runs that struck like a dagger in Rasharkin’s rearguard and time after time she delivered scores for herself or setup her teammates. Congratulations to Brídíní Óga team and mentors – 2023 has been a great year for you to date.

Antrim Stars meet Aghagallon All Stars

Saturday was a very exciting training session for the Aghagallon All Stars as some special visitors arrived to wish them well before their long awaited trip to Croke Park this week.

Antrim Camogie players Chloe McShane and Niamh Cosgrove, Antrim ladies footballers Anna Mullholand and Grainne McLaughlin and Antrim men’s footballer Marc Jordan kindly took time out of their busy schedule on Saturday to visit the Aghagallon All Stars team during their special sponsored training session in Páirc na nGael.

Antrim Camogie stars Naimh Cosgrove and Chloe McShane with Jay Beatty at the Aghagallon All Stars big day last weekend.

The Antrim legends joined in with both the younger and the older group’s training sessions and the children got the chance to show off all their skills and determination. The Antrim girls even got a chance to learn a few new skills themselves as they keenly jumped into the visiting ice cream van to give out ice cream to all the children. Grainne and Chloe proved a dab hand at pulling a poke!

Aghagallon All Stars coordinator, Bronagh McCavigan stated, ‘We want to thank all the Antrim players for coming here today. It has given the kids a real lift to meet their heroes and boosts all our excitement for going to Croke Park. We hope to go and do our club and county proud just like the Antrim players here today!’

The team is looking forward to playing football, visiting the museum and of course, meeting up with their friends in the other Antrim GAA for All teams, Antrim All Stars and Naomh Éanna. We wish our all our Antrim GAA for All teams the best day and hope they make lots of special memories.

Almost ‘Sevens’ Heaven for Moneyglass

St. Ergnat’s Kilmacud Cup Finalist.

On Saturday past the Moneyglass All-Ireland Feile winning team, managed by Kevin Madden and Ruairi O’Boyle headed to Kilmacud Crokes for the annual 7s tournament that would see the Antrim girls pit their skills against the crème de la crème the length and breath of Ireland. There were 32 teams who all started off in the cup competition. These teams consisted mostly of winning feile teams from all over the country. The competition was run with eight groups of 4 competing in a round robin with the top two going through to the cup and the bottom two to the plate.

First up for the Antrim girls was Gaultier from Waterford who were managed by former Wexford and Kildare Senior men’s manager Jason Ryan. This was a familiar opponent as Moneyglass had narrowly beaten them in the epic All-Ireland Feile final in Tobbercurry just six weeks previous. After a tense enough opening half the girls in blue and yellow pulled clear with a bit to spare. Defensively Moneyglass were tough, tenacious and uncompromising while at the other end the attacking trio of Leah Stewart, JoJo Darragh and Ruby McErlain were pulling teams apart. This victory was secured on a scoreline pf 6-1 to 1-5. This was followed up with a 6-1 to 1-1 victory over Leitrim team Fenagh and a 6-6 to 2-2 win over Arklow of county Wicklow. In the first of the knock-out games Garycastle of Westmeath proved to be a very physical tough opponent, but eventually the saffron girls ran out winners on a score line of 4-4 to 1-4 to reach the cup quarter finals.

The next game was to be their toughest game to date against the Clare representatives Fergus Rovers but a strong finish saw them home on a scoreline of 6-9 to 6-4. Into the semifinals and it was clear the St Ergnat’s girls were peaking at the right time as they produced their best performance to date on beating the Galway champions Naomh Mhuire 7-7 to 5-3. After six tough rounds of 20 minutes per game, 32 teams were now down to a mere duo. Antrim v Dublin. St Ergnat’s Moneyglass v Naomh Mearnog. The Dublin team from Portmarnock had already disposed of Lavey by 14 points so a formidable opponent lay ahead. As the rain came petting down to make underfoot conditions difficult, Moneyglass were struggling with the strength, size and physicality of their opponents who were goal hungry. Eight minutes into the first half Naomh Mearnog were nine ahead but a brace of penalties by JoJo Darragh had pulled it back to a single score going into the last five. With only a couple of minutes left a gallant Moneyglass had pulled the game from the fire against all the odds and led by a single point.

But a strong finish from Naomh Mearnog saw them bag 1-1 to run out winners on a scoreline of 6-3 to 4-6. Despite the disappointment in the end the Antrim girls could be hugely proud of their achievement on reaching the All-Ireland Final in beating teams from Leitrim, Wicklow, Clare, Galway, WestMeath, and Waterford. There were so many fine performers on the Moneyglass team but one name that kept getting mentioned by referees and opponents alike was the number 8, Leah Stewart, who many were touting as their Player of the Tournament. With over half their squad underage again next year perhaps we will see this young Moneyglass team go one better in 12 months time.

O’Kane hoping Moneyglass can go a step further this season

Charlie OKane is in his second year as manager of the Antrim club senior Championship and League Champions and Ulster finalist of 2022 St Ergnats Moneyglass. This week Saffron Gael’s Elaine Kelly spoke to him as he prepares for the Championship for a second season.

Question: Following what was a very successful 2022 campaign, what is your ambitions for 2023 with the Moneyglass Senior Ladies team.

Answer:  The aim for 2023 is to progress. To improve and be better than we were last year. We have our sights set on again winning both the league and championship in Antrim but I have no doubt we will face some stiff competition in both.

Antrim champions and Ulster finalists, Moneyglass with their manager, Charlie O’Kane

Question: As Moneyglass prepare to defend their Antrim title what are your expectations and how has Moneyglass prepared for it.

Answer: The championship will be tough. Being the current champions puts a target on our backs. Everyone will be coming to beat us. We will just go out and play our game and take each game as it comes.

Question: Who are the teams that have impressed you during this year’s Antrim league and what teams carry the greatest threat in the championship’

Answer: St. Bridget’s and Glenravel are improving every year and I’m sure St. Paul’s will have something to say about who wins it this year.

Question: Everyone talks about how tight a group the Moneyglass Senior team are. Is this the case and how much does that benefit the group in training and in games.

Answer: Yes it’s a very tight knit group. The togetherness within the squad and the wider support team is unreal , such as the main sponsor Boyds Service Station and other local businesses who are always happy to support the girls. These are  all critical to the recent success we have had.

Question: What a run you, the management team and the Moneyglass ladies had last season. History makers being the first Antrim Senior team to play in an Ulster Final. You only lost out at the Final in the last few minutes of a fantastic end to end game and it was lost to a very experienced Donaghmoyne Co Monaghan team.  Has that performance given you and the team the confidence going into this year’s Antrim campaign of retaining the trophies and hopefully push on to collect a first Ulster title.

Answer: We would hope we have learnt from that game and improved for the year ahead. Last year we were very inexperienced at the Ulster table but if we can come through Antrim we will hopefully be better for last year’s defeat.

Question: What is the secret of you and your management team keeping a big panel of players happy and this senior team strong and together.

Answer: There’s no big secret. The squad, my management team of Donal and Annmarie and myself are all focused on the same goal. That of bringing success to Moneyglass. When everyone is pulling in the same direction for a common cause the natural outcome is a united group.
